Baltimore, MD – Apr. 26, 2023 - Residents of Ranchleigh in Baltimore County  have been without mail delivery for over a month following an alleged dog bite incident involving a mail carrier. On March 25, a dog on the block supposedly bit a postal worker, leaving the details of the attack unclear. However, since then, the post office has refused to deliver mail to the entire 6600 block of Edenvale, affecting approximately 20 families.

According to a report, a dog named Archie is said to have chased and run into the mail carrier, leaving teeth marks on one side of her body. The dog's owner, Alex Zaslov, says that while his pet can chase and bark at people, he didn't bite the mail carrier. Animal services have confirmed that the dog had all its shots.

Many of the neighbors have been working to resolve the issue, but to no avail. Resident Suri Cohen stated, “We have been in touch with The Mount Washington branch, Consumer Affairs, our congressman and senator, etc. The post office keeps on changing the story about when we will get our mail, who’s decision it is, what steps need to happen first, and even the details of the incident itself. At this point, we are unsure of what steps to take, and it is quite frustrating. The Mt Washington branch has also resorted to closing either the entire post office or the pick-up window at random times of the day, blaming it on ‘staffing issues,’ making it very difficult and inconvenient to even pick up our mail.”

Neighbors are frustrated that they have not received mail for a month and have to go to the post office daily to collect their mail. They expressed their desire for the issue to be resolved as soon as possible. Another resident, Elizabeth Lefkowitz, stated: “we are upset at the lack of service and the lack of effort from the US Postal Service to resolve this mail delivery issue. There needs to be a solution put into place, not to just punish the neighbors for a situation they have no control over. Perhaps finding an alternate mail carrier that isn’t terrified of dogs may help. Why not work with the dog owner to move his dog to the back and mailbox to the front to ensure mail carrier safety, instead of punishing the whole street by not delivering our mail?”

The owner has since agreed to place a mailbox on the street thereby avoiding the need for the carrier to approach its home.

The U.S. Postal Service has not commented on the situation.
