Jerusalem, Israel - Feb. 18, 2023 - The Michael Levin Base in Jerusalem, Israel officially opened in its new location near Machane Yehudah Market on Friday morning, February 17, with a special event.  Chairman of the Board Richard Corman introduced fellow board members present, welcomed the invited guests, and acted as master of ceremonies.

First to speak was Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum who mentioned how she made aliyah soon after marriage, so her husband was not considered a lone soldier. She appreciated how The Base is important for the young women who volunteer for National Service as Banot Sherut. They have received little recognition and less support compared to the lone soldiers.

Greatly appreciated was the attendance of the new Israel Police Spokesperson Dean Elsdunne. Elsdunne served as a lone soldier with the Border Police and began his role as Spokesperson on February 1, 2023. Unfortunately, he could not make use of The Base Shabbat meals and social events because of his undercover role. During a time of isolation with Covid, he received meals by contacting The Base. Elsdunne did not leave his name, all contact was anonymous. The recent realization of the connection was a pleasant surprise to all. Everyone in the room was impressed by his remarks concerning his service.

Bernie Weinberger,
who lead and did much of the physical work to beautifully renovate the new larger space was honored to place the mezuzah at the entrance.

The Base serves as a home away from home for lone soldiers and lone banot sherut, young people from around the world who come and volunteer to serve in Israel.

Co-directors Lizzie Noach and Bonnie Holzberg Rosenbaum are proud of how The Base has developed in three years since it opened. The extra challenges of growth and survival during a pandemic were numerous.

How appropriate the official opening of the new, larger Michael Levin Base was on what would have been Michael z"l 39th birthday. "This was his dream, a place for lone soldiers to make a difference..." noted his mother Harriet Levin who was not present, but plans to be in Israel soon.

Besides Shabbat and Yom Tov meals and food, The Base offers counseling and a place to hang out with a washing machine available. The new location has a grill ready for BBQ events, and a small outside area. Necessary supplies, such as shampoos and warm winter clothing, are available for lone soldiers and banot sherut to get not only to save time but at a reduced cost.

The mural from the previous location was removed and replaced on a wall visible from the street. Three paintings of fallen lone soldier Alex Singer z"l (1987) are displayed on a wall near the window. The bracha for the safety of all soldiers is near the entrance along with photos in remembrance of fallen soldiers.

After years of being abandoned, the old post office space near the shuk has been redone and refitted to serve an important role as a colorful and warm welcoming home for lone soldiers and banot sherut.
