Back to TA: Approximately 250 Alumni Return for an Unforgettable Yarchei Kallah
Scroll for photo essayBaltimore, MD – October 6, 2026 - It was a morning that will not soon be forgotten at Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim - Talmudical Academy of Baltimore.  Approximately 250 alumni returned to TA on Tuesday, October 6, for the Yeshiva’s inaugural Alumni Yarchei Kallah, filling the campus with an extraordinary combination of Torah, kavod haTorah, friendship, and a genuine sense of coming home. The theme of the event was “Back to TA - Where It All Began,” and from the moment the first alumni began arriving, that feeling was unmistakable. In fact, dozens came well before the scheduled start time. They helped themselves to refreshments, caught up with old friends and Rebbeim, and filled the lobby with conversation and laughter, almost as if they had n...

Israel Prepares For Possible Increase In French Jewish Immigration
Israel is preparing for a possible increase in Jewish immigration from France as unrest continues across the country. Aliyah and Integration Minister Ofir Sofer told the cabinet that Israel should prepare a plan to help absorb a potential wave of French Jewish immigrants, including those who may have fewer financial resources. The call comes as student protests and clashes with police have spread across France. Protests began last week at hundreds of schools, with demonstrators blocking school entrances and roads, setting garbage bins on fire and clashing with police. Israel has already seen a record number of Jewish immigrants from France this year. Nearly 4,000 French Jews have made aliyah, about 40% more than last year. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said funding should be provided...

Baltimore’s Water Is Getting A Little More “Susquehanna”
Baltimore is adding a new ingredient to its drinking water: the Susquehanna River. With drought conditions continuing to strain the city’s reservoirs, Baltimore has turned to the river as a backup water source. About 30 million gallons of Susquehanna River water a day will travel approximately 39 miles to the Montebello Filtration Plants. There, it will be blended with water from the Prettyboy and Loch Raven reservoirs before being treated and tested. The change affects customers served by the Montebello plants in East Baltimore and Baltimore County. Some residents may notice a slight difference in the taste, odor or color of their water, although most people are not expected to notice much of a change. The blended supply is expected to contain between 20% and 40% Susquehanna Rive...

Baltimore, MD – October 6, 2026 – President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point Tuesday afternoon to announce a major expansion of U.S. submarine production, including a planned $3.7 billion Anduril Industries shipyard expected to create 3,100 permanent jobs. BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.

The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Beyond The Headlines: A Weekly Glimpse Into The Israel You Won’t Read About In The News
The Lessons We Cannot Afford to Miss Our Sages teach us not to be indifferent. Not to let things simply pass us by. Not to treat everything as a random occurrence, a meaningless coincidence. Not to look at reality as nothing more than a collection of news stories that have nothing to say to us. Let’s look for a moment at the rescue of the Flydubai plane last week. Naturally, we are always looking for the “hero” of the story. But this week, there wasn’t just one hero. There was an extraordinary chain of rescue, made up of many small pieces that came together — many pieces of a puzzle. There was the woman who heard a noise and realized that something was wrong; the pilot who had been stabbed and apparently managed to open the door; the heroes who overpowere...

Hilchos Chanukah

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1  and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion,  and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments.  They put their hands on their property and their daughters.  They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean.  The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them.  Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them  and saved the Jews from their hands.  They appointed a king from the Priests,  and the kingdom of Israel was restored  for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple).  When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them,  it was the 25th of Kislev2  when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple,  except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest,  and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only.  But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days,  until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil.  For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation  that these eight days  that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise.  One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses,  every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle.  These days are called ''Hanukah''  that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month)  because on the 25th they rested from their enemies.  and also because of those days  they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled.  Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah.  Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days.  One should tell one's children the story of the miracles  that were done for our fore-fathers in those days,  (see Josephus)  However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment  unless one says at the meal songs of praise.  One should increase charity in these Hanukah days,  for this can help mend any defects in our souls.  This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1)

Israeli Consul Invites NYC Mayor Mamdani to View October 7 Footage
Israel’s Consul-General in New York, Ofir Akunis, has invited New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to view a 47-minute film documenting the October 7 massacre. Akunis extended the invitation to Mamdani during a memorial ceremony held by the Israeli Consulate in New York on Monday evening, attended by approximately 1,000 people. He also sent the mayor a formal letter inviting him to attend the October 7 screening, which is scheduled to take place in New York on Wednesday, marking three years since the Hamas-led attack. The film, produced by the IDF, contains footage recorded by Hamas terrorists during the October 7 attack. Akunis urged Mamdani to watch the footage firsthand, saying it could provide a clearer understanding of what occurred that day and why Israel considers its security...

Rabbi Zvi Teichman on Parshas Eikev - The Window of Our Soul

Twice daily we recite within the second paragraph of the Shema the verse where G-d commands us לעבדו — to serve Him, בכל לבבכם — with all your heart.

Rashi explains that this 'service of the heart' is תפילה — prayer.

This verb לעבוד — to 'serve' G-d seems to be uniquely applied to fulfilling the obligation to pray, but not generally used in describing our duty regarding other commands.

There is one other area where we use this verb definitively. The service in the Temple with all its associated activities in bringing offerings are termed עבודה — service.

The word עבודה usually conjures up an image of hard work, as indicated in the noun used to describe an עבד — as a slave or servant.

Perhaps in context of the עבודת הקרבנות — the service of offerings, which involves much physically taxing activity we can understand its implication, but in relation to prayer is it truly so difficult?

Rashi, quoting from Sifrei, goes into great deal to discover a source for this notion that serving G-d with all our heart indeed refers to prayer.

First, he cites a verse from Daniel where it reports how the king told him as he was cast into a den of lions — "May your God, Whom you פלח — serve regularly, save you!"(6 17)

Certainly, he wasn't referring to the service of offerings since in Bavel there was no Temple. He was alluding to the service of 'prayer' Daniel engaged in daily as we find in an earlier verse (11) that depicts 'there were open windows [in his upper chamber opposite Jerusalem, and three times a day he [Daniel] kneeled on his knees and prayed.]

Secondly, Rashi quotes an additional verse indicating the notion that prayer is a service akin to offerings and thus considered עבודה, from Tehilim where King David beseeches G-d, "תכון תפלתי — My prayer shall be established, קטרת לפניך — like incense before You." (תהלים קמא ב)

Although Rashi in the name of the Sifrei proves the point nevertheless the question remains, in what way is prayer associated with עבודה — tedious work?

Additionally, when Rashi quotes the verse in Daniel that states explicitly he prayed, Rashi only quotes the segment that portrays the open windows, leaving out the thrust of the verse that states 'he kneeled on his knees and prayed'?

Lastly, the verse regarding King David equates prayer to 'service' in the Temple, but seemingly only emphasizing his desire it be equated to the service of קטרת — Incense.

The prophet Hoshea specifically states how in the absence of a Temple, ונשלמה פרים and let us render [for the absence of] bulls, שפתינו — [the offering of] our lips. (הושע יד ג)

Why then did King David only ask for his prayer to be as the Incense?

The last detail outlined among the various vessels in the Tabernacle was theמזבח הזהב — Golden Altar, where upon the twice — once in the morning and again towards the end of the day — daily offering of קטרת — Incense.

The Midrash says that distinct from all other offerings that were brought to atone for various failings, the Ketores was brought as an expression of joy.

Its goal was to present an exquisite combination of eleven different spices and balm that gave off a most pleasant aroma, an ephemeral intangible element that arouses the sense of smell, associated with our spiritual soul, an expression of G-d's being pleased and happy with us.

The very word קטרת means קשר — knotted, intimating an inextricable bond and connection to His people.

Prayer in its most elemental meaning is a means by which man communicates with G-d conveying acknowledgment of his dependance on His favor, seeking through prayer to request G-d's benevolence in acquiring one's needs.

One of the great Kabbalists, Rav Yehuda Chayat, who was persecuted during the Inquisition and expelled from Spain, describes in his famous commentary Minchas Yehuda, another aspect of prayer.

The word תפילה — prayer, he suggests, is rooted in the word תפל — which means vapid or tasteless, used to describe an item which on its own is useless, who needs others but is bottom of the totem pole in being needed by anyone else.

One who sees himself solely defined by total allegiance to G-d, submitting himself as a vessel to promote כבוד שמים — honor of Heaven, presenting himself before G-d, represents the highest essence of prayer and absolute connection to Him.

When engaged in prayer of request and wishes one is often focused on the issues one is facing and distracted by that reality that makes it difficult to have focus and total intention.

When one can transcend those thoughts by transporting oneself into a super-reality of total submission to G-d and his dictates, one then can experience freedom from anxiety and despair, relishing a connection reminiscent of the inspired and joyous scent of the Ketores in the Temple.

It requires a reframing of our perspective of reality and an absolute reliance on G-d.

Perhaps in the noting of Daniel's prayers in his chamber with 'windows that were facing in the direction of Yerushalayim', was meant to reveal to us the secret of Daniel's survival during his employ in the palace of the evil Nevuchadnezzar.

The Rebbe R' Aharon of Belz quoted in the name of his father, the Rebbe R' Yisachar Dov of Belz, who suggests that Yosef's ability to resist the temptations of Potiphar's wife, through — as the Talmud teaches — his seeing 'a image of his father Yaakov' בחלון — in a window, wasn't some mystical intervention, but Yosef implementing this technique of Tefilla. Yosef elevated himself by visualizing in his mind a panoramic view of 'Yerushalayim', submitting himself as a vessel to the will of G-d, unshackling himself from the chains of illusory desires.

The notion of עבודה that is emphasized is not related to strenuous tasks but rather to a sense of total acquiescence to G-d's will. Like a loyal servant who has no quest for independence, whose total being is devoted to his master's direction and needs.

When the Nazi's invaded Kelm and the entire community was rounded up for their final destination, Rav Doniel Movoshovitz hy'd, was one the great leaders who led them to the killing fields. They marched proudly singing Adon Olam with the Yom Tov niggun. Once they arrived, Rav Doniel requested permission to return to his home for a short while. When he came back, his family asked what he had gone back for, he responded, "We are about to be brought as a korban for Hashem. A sacrifice should have a ריח ניחוח — a satisfying smell, so I went back to brush my teeth for the occasion!"

King David yearned to find that window each time he prayed in search of a portal that possessed the scent of the Ketores that would connect him to G-d.

May we each find that window of our souls that can catapult us beyond the gravity of this world and connect to the Yerushalayim high above, enthusing us with joy even in the face of the most difficult challenges!

באהבה,

צבי יהודה טייכמאן

National Security Council Warns of Heightened Terror Risk Ahead of October 7
Israel’s National Security Council is warning of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks against Israelis and Jews abroad ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. The NSC said Iran and its proxies, Hamas and global jihadist groups view the anniversary as a significant date and may seek to carry out attacks, demonstrations or other acts of violence. Israelis were urged to avoid Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland and Egypt, including the Sinai Peninsula. Travelers elsewhere were advised to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, minimize speaking Hebrew in crowded areas and exercise caution around Jewish and Israeli institutions. The council also warned against posting travel plans or real-time locations on social media and urged Israelis to remain vigilant and...

JUSA-Chabad Brings Sukkos to Maryland Military Bases, Making History at 175th Wing
This Sukkos, Baltimore Shliach and Chaplain Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, director of the Jewish Uniformed Service Association of Maryland–Chabad (JUSA), brought the joy and traditions of Sukkos directly to Maryland’s military community. For the first time, JUSA arranged a Sukkah at the 175th Wing at Warfield Air National Guard Base. One Staff Sergeant was especially appreciative, explaining that the Sukkah allowed him to eat his meals in a Sukkah while working on base. The Sukkah also led to an unexpected Jewish discovery. A Tech Sergeant stopped by the Sukkah and shared that, although she does not identify as Jewish, she said her maternal great-grandmother was Jewish. Rabbi Tenenbaum explained that according to halacha she is considered Jewish. Rabbi Tenenbaum then explained t...
