By: BJLife/Rabbi Yonah Sklare
Baltimore,MD - Jan 18, 2022 - Ahava and Yira-- Love and Awe, these two midos are both elemental to Yiddishkeit. Yet, at times they can seem contradictory or חס ושלום incompatible. The key to a balanced Ahava-Yira relationship will emerge from a syncretic study, connecting Matan Torah back to the formative stage of Yiddishkeit in the days of the Avos.

Baltimore, MD - Oct. 28, 2025 - Two historically Black colleges and universities in Maryland received a total of $101 million in donations in a span of less than two weeks from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the schools announced this month.
The unrestricted gifts — $63 million for Morgan State University announced on Oct. 15 and $38 million to University of Maryland, Eastern Shore announced Friday — are in addition to $60 million that Scott gave the schools five years ago. Morgan State got $40 million then, and UMES received $20 million.
Scott also donated $25 million in 2020 to Maryland’s second-largest HBCU, Bowie State University, the largest single gift in the school’s history. In total, Scott has donated $186 milli...
Baltimore, MD - Oct. 28, 2025 - On Monday, October 27, around 6:20 p.m., a man entered Market Maven and stole a pair of Tefillin from the self-service stand at 1630 Reisterstown Road.
Chabad of Maryland launched the stand shortly after October 7, 2023, providing shoppers a moment to pray, give charity, and connect spiritually. The stand attracted visitors almost daily, making this theft especially disheartening. It now sits empty, leaving a visible gap in the community’s spiritual space.
Baltimore County Police are investigating the incident.
Anyone with information should contact Market Maven management, Baltimore County Police, or Chabad of Maryland.

New York, NY - Oct. 28, 2025 - Earlier this month, Rabbi Moshe Hauer, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union unexpectedly passed away at 60. The OU is the largest umbrella organization for Orthodox Jews and Rabbi Hauer has been its face and voice to the world since 2020.

His passing has also evoked emotional responses from religious leaders of other faiths and denominations. In a world where disagreement and ideological division seem like impenetrable barriers to productive communication, Rabbi Hauer broke through the walls of division to find partnership on common causes and thoughtful understanding on areas of disagre...
A federal judge in San Francisco on Tuesday indefinitely barred the Trump administration from firing federal employees during the government shutdown.
U.S. District Judge Susan Illston granted a preliminary injunction that bars the firings while a lawsuit challenging them plays out. She had previously issued a temporary restraining order against the job cuts that was set to expire Wednesday.
Illston, who was nominated by Democratic President Bill Clinton, has said she believes the evidence will ultimately show the mass firings were illegal and in excess of authority.
The Republican administration has slashed jobs in education, health and other areas it says are favored by Democrats. The administration has also said it will not tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to kee...
