Baltimore, MD - Jan. 3, 2021 - Contact Representatives Dutch Ruppersberger (2d District) and John Sarbanes (3rd District) to voice your opposition to their signing the December 23, 2019 letter issued by 150 House Democrats urging President-Elect Biden to re-enter the Iran nuclear deal (the "Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action," or JCPOA) without any negotiations or preconditions.

The JCPOA was a severely flawed agreement.  It allowed the Iranian regime to develop advanced centrifuges and long range ballistic-missiles; released to the regime  billions of dollars that can be used to pursue its anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-Iranian people and pro-terror activities; and (most problematically) contained sunset clauses which provide Iran with a legal route to a nuclear weapon.  Any beneficial aspects of the agreement are negated by evidence that the mullahs have been violating the JCPOA ever since the deal was signed in 2015.

The Trump Administration’s withdrawal from JCPOA, as well as such policies as the imposition of sanctions against Iran and the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, provides the incoming administration with leverage against Iran that should not be squandered. Instead of simply returning to an unchanged agreement as advocated by Congressmen Ruppersberger and Sarbanes, the Biden team should exert that leverage to strengthen the agreement. In any event, maintaining maximum pressure upon the Iranian regime is preferable to reinstituting the JCPOA in its current form.
