Jerusalem, Israel - Dec. 10, 2020 - An online event on December 8, 2020, hosted by the US Department of Education called "Confronting a Culture on Campus Censorship" was the venue to announce a hotline available for reporting harassment on college campuses. FreeSpeech@ed.org is the email address of the new hotline, the Department of Education's latest initiative.   The hotline offers individuals, especially college students and faculty, the opportunity to report abuse, and support academic freedom on campus.

Three individuals on a panel, all victims of "woke" cancel culture, presented their stories.  Linguist Professor Joshua Katz said he survived at Princeton and was able to "stand up to the mob" because Princeton had signed on to the Chicago Principles. The Chicago Principles are a set of guiding principles intended to demonstrate a commitment to freedom of speech and freedom of expression on college campuses in the United States  As of August 2020, it has been reported that 76 U.S. colleges and universities had adopted or endorsed the Chicago Statement or a substantially similar statement.

In July, Katz published "A Declaration of Independence by a Princeton Professor."  Apparently, there was one statement in the declaration by the classics professor that caused an uproar which almost ended his years of teaching and work in excellent standing.  "The Black Justice League, which was active on campus from 2014 until 2016, was a small local terrorist organization that made life miserable for the many (including the many black students) who did not agree with its members’ demands. Recently I watched an “Instagram Live” of one of its alumni leaders, who—emboldened by recent events and egged on by over 200 supporters who were baying for blood—presided over what was effectively a Struggle Session against one of his former classmates. It was one of the most evil things I have ever witnessed, and I do not say this lightly."

Katz concluded,"Independence of thought is considered the hallmark of academia, but everyone deserves it. In the United States, thank heavens, freedom to think for oneself is still a right, not a privilege."

Reportedly, 63% of Americans are afraid to speak out. Cancel culture, intolerance of ideas, silencing of different points of view are affecting academic freedom. Other participants on Department of Education event spoke of totalitism politics of progressive liberal ideology from the woke revolution and mob rule limiting freedom and truth, bringing to mind Orwell and his "1984."  democracy is in a fragile place. Removing statues, erasing Woodrow Wilson's name, rewriting history, and squelching thoughts are examples and becoming all too common. Polarization in society to gain control by the progressive liberals and "woke" is against the democratic ideals of free speech, free inquiry, and free expression.

Previously, on October 20, 2020, Reed Rubinstein, Principal Deputy General Counsel in the US Department of Education, introduced an online session dealing with the release of a report on unreported foreign gifts. Donations over $250,000 from foreign governments are required by law to be reported.  Section 117 of the Higher Education Act requires institutions of higher education to transparently report foreign gifts and contracts. The investigation launched in February 2020 by the Department of Education uncovered billions in unreported financial ties.  U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos reported the massive failure of many colleges and universities to disclose more than $6.5 billion in funding and resources from foreign sources including China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

On January 20, 2021, a new US administration is to take office.

Will the new adminstrtaion follow through with these Department of Education initiatives to make universities more transparent and safer environments?
