New York City elected democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as its next mayor on Tuesday, according to Decision Desk HQ, sending a message to Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, that Mamdani’s message of affordability resonated loudly.
In the day’s big governor’s races, Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, two former Democratic House members, will now lead Virginia and New Jersey, Decision Desk HQ projected. Spanberger will be the commonwealth’s first female leader.
In Virginia’s attorney general race, Del. Jay Jones (D) overcame a scandal involving leaked violent text messages to beat incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares (R).

The Fox News Decision Desk projected that New Jersey Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill will become the next governor of New Jersey, keeping the state blue in her ballot battle against Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli.
By defeating Ciattarelli in a very competitive and combustible race that grabbed plenty of national attention, Sherrill will succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.
Sherrill has served in the U.S. House since 2019, after flipping the Garden State's 11th District seat away from the Republicans as part of 2018's blue wave election year during President Donald Trump's first term in the White House. Sherrill made history as the first woman to represent the suburban district in northern New Jersey."We've seen, you know, ralli...
BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.
Baltimore, MD - Nov. 4, 2025 - Rabbi Yaakov Menken, a prominent Orthodox leader, announced he is stepping down from the Heritage Foundation’s National Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, citing the organization’s leadership for failing to condemn antisemitic rhetoric linked to Tucker Carlson.
Speaking on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America”, Menken said his resignation is due to Heritage president Kevin Roberts refusing to apologize for his role in the controversy. The dispute began after Roberts posted a video supporting an interview Carlson conducted with Nick Fuentes, a far-right activist widely identified as a white supremacist and antisemite.
In a letter shared with Newsmax, Menken explained that remaining on the task force would implicitly legitimize an in...
Democrat Abigail Spanberger has defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to flip control of the Virginia governorship, NBC News projects, setting her up to become the first woman to lead the state.
Spanberger, a former congresswoman, won the race in the blue-leaning state after holding polling and fundraising advantages throughout the campaign. Her victory provides Democrats with a shot of momentum as the party attempts to chart their path forward after their 2024 election defeat.
Virginia was one of two states, along with New Jersey, that held the first governor’s races of President Donald Trump’s second term.
Spanberger, 47, centered her campaign heavily on economic and affordability issues, as well public safety and her support for abortion rights. Spanberger’s campa...
In last week’s Parsha the king of Sedom offered Avraham a reward for conquering the four kings and freeing the captives. Avraham refused it. He used an interesting phrase in his refusal. He said the following, “I will not accept a thread or a shoe lace, so that you will not be able to say I made Avraham rich.”
Rav Nachman the son of Yitzchok says in the Gemara, Meseches Shabbos, daf samech alef, amud alef that one must put on his right shoe first, leave it untied and then put on the left shoe. He should tie the left shoe first and then go back to tie the right shoe. The Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, siman bais, seif koton daled rules that this is the proper way for someone to put on shoes.
There are two reasons why the left takes precedence over the right...

Baltimore, MD - Nov. 4, 2025 - Lisa Lea, 57, appeared in court on Tuesday to plead guilty to six counts of negligent manslaughter by automobile for her part in a devastating I-695 crash in March 2023.
The crash killed Mahlon Simmons II, Mahlon Simmons III, Jose Escobar, Carlos Escobar, Sybil DiMaggio, and Rolando Ruiz, who were all construction workers in a work zone on the shoulder of the highway.
Lea became emotional as she answered the judge's questions about her acceptance of the plea agreement, including as he read out what would need to be proved if she did go to trial.
Prosecutors are recommending that Lea serve 24 years in prison, four years for each victim.
Her sentence will be determined by the judge at a hearing set for January 30th, 2026.

Washngton, D.C. - Nov 4, 2025 - The Senate on Tuesday failed to reopen the federal government for the 14th time, as the shutdown tied with the 2018-19 closure as the longest in U.S. history.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) indicated Monday that he was “optimistic” the federal government will reopen by the end of the week. But Democrats are divided on how to make a deal to end it.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is still top of mind for lawmakers after the administration on Monday told a federal judge it would partially fund benefits amid the shutdown. President Trump on Tuesday, however, signaled he would not be funding the program until the government reopens.

Annapolis, MD - Nov. 3, 2025 - Governor Wes Moore released $62 million in state funding Monday to ensure Marylanders receive full November SNAP benefits, his office announced.
The decision comes days after two federal judges ruled that the government must maintain SNAP benefits for Americans.
The USDA had argued it couldn't tap into its contingency fund to maintain benefits, but both judges disagreed.
"One of the first and most basic priorities of governing is to ensure that families do not go hungry," Moore said. "We will continue to do everything in our power to protect our people in these difficult times. But no state can fill the enormous gap created by Donald Trump and his administration. It's time for the federal government to do its job and fully fund food assistance."
