There are three options Baltimore County Public Schools is considering for next year, including starting school before Labor Day.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Should school start before of after Labor Day? That is one question that the Baltimore County Board of Education wants to hear from the public about as it considers the academic calendar for 2020–2021.

Currently, there are three options, and the board plans to vote at its meeting Tuesday, Nov. 5.

There will be a public hearing on the 2020-2021 calendar proposal Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Here are the options:

Proposed BCPS Calendar Options 2020-2021

OPTION A: Start date of Aug. 31, 10 calendar day Spring Break, last day of school between June 11-18, depending on inclement weather days used.

OPTION B: Start date of Sept. 8, 5 calendar day Spring Break, last day of school between June 15-22, depending on inclement weather days used.

OPTION C: Start date of Sept. 8, 10 calendar day spring break, last day of school between June 21-28, depending on inclement weather days used.

For the past few years, school has started after Labor Day in Baltimore County.

Gov. Larry Hogan signed an executive order in 2016 requiring Maryland public schools to start classes after Labor Day in 2017 and end the school year by June 15.

At the time, he said nearly 75 percent of Marylanders endorsed the plan, which he said had benefits on many fronts, from keeping kids out of school whose buildings were not air-conditioned to bolstering the state's economy.

This March, the Maryland General Assembly overturned the order, leaving it up to the local school board in each jurisdiction to decide whether to begin the school year before or after Labor Day.

In May the Baltimore County school board asked the public to help vote on when to start the 2019 school year because of the change in the law and a budgetary issue.

Afterward, the board voted to continue starting schools after Labor Day for several reasons, including because some schools are still not air-conditioned. Eight schools were closed Sept. 12 and Oct. 2 this school year because they lack air conditioning: Bedford Elementary School, Berkshire Elementary School, Campfield Early Learning Center, Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies, Colgate Elementary School, Dulaney High School, Lansdowne High School and Watershed Public Charter School.
