Critical care chief at Northwest Hospital says more younger people are being hospitalized

Maryland Department of Health data shows an increasing number of Marylanders are being hospitalized with COVID-19.

The current surge has been in the works since the beginning of March as people are still getting sick every day. It's impacting younger Marylanders the most, according to the chief of critical care at Northwest Hospital, Dr. Kinjal Sheth.

"It is still overwhelmingly, to be honest, just depressing. We see so much more death than we've ever seen before," Sheth said. "Unfortunately, I know what the truth is: It's that once you get to a certain point, the likelihood of survival gets less and less, and it's just very disheartening."

Sheth said the reopening process, coupled with the highly transmissible U.K. variant, is putting more young people in the hospital.

"In the first couple of waves, the elderly either got it or they've been vaccinated. Now, we're seeing as more things opened up, that it's basically come into the younger demographic, and the new variant is much more highly contagious," Sheth said. Read more at WBALTV

According to the MDH, there are 1,259 COVID-19 patients in Maryland hospitals, which is an increase of nearly 65% in the last five weeks.

"The risk has not completely gone away," Sheth said.
