Jerusalem, Israel - Dec. 3, 2019 - The Fourth Jerusalem Biennale for Contemporary Jewish Art, with For Heaven’s Sake! (LeShem Shamayim) its theme, ran from October 10- November 28. The 2019 Jerusalem Biennale, showcased the work of 200 professional Israeli and international artists in 30 exhibitions and projects exhibited in 14 venues around the city. Artists (Jewish and non-Jewish) from the USA, UK, Europe, Morocco, India, and Argentina participated, alongside artists from Israel.

On Wednesday evening November 27, at Van Leer Institute Jerusalem a special gallery talk was held featuring two of the Biennale's participating artists, Dorit Feldman and Rachel Rotenberg. Their works explored the intersection of contemporary art and the world of Jewish thought in an exhibition titled, "Transcendence" curated by Dr. J. Susan Isaacs.

From 1994 to 2014, before moving to Israel, Rotenberg and her family lived in Baltimore. All of her sculptures on display at the Van Leer Institute, inside the main entrance lobby and out on the grounds were made the last three years in Israel. She told BJL that there are more of her pieces still in the US, in storage in Baltimore.

"I begin my creative process with pencil drawings. They narrate my interior dialogue. I work the ideas until a leading image emerges. I commit and begin to cut, glue, and join wood beams to one another. I often return to my sketchbook to solve issues that arise, in this way I navigate through each piece. I build and I grind and I sand to further articulate form, texture, and detail. Surface and color are high-ranking," stated Rotenberg.

At the gallery talks, friends and admirers listen to the artists explain their process and inspiration for their artistic creations. A longtime family friend, Yocheved Zemel, was one of the audience members on hand to view and hear Rachel Rotenberg discuss her sculptures.
