Fearing a major budget deficit after auditors finish their overdue analysis of town finances, Ramapo officials are again contemplating selling off properties. The town’s deficit had at one pointreached $14 million, largely due to building the estimated $60 million Rockland Boulders baseball stadium near Pomona.

“Any sale would go toward our general fund to reduce our significant deficit problem,” Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht said Friday. “Our estimate is the deficit stands at $8 million but the audits are not completed.”

Ramapo spent an estimated $100 million on land purchases using bonds during former Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence’s 17-year tenure. Much of the land was purchased for preservation — including thousands of watershed acres in Torne Valley in the rural and mountainous western Ramapo.

The 16.3-acre Suffern Quarry and a vacant 8.3-acre parcel on Pinebrook Road in Chestnut Ridge top the list. Specht said Friday that the town has requested purchase prices on the quarry, and that a proposal for Pinebrook has been drawn up.
