Baltimore, MD - Mar. 31, 2024  - The Captain of the Port (COTP) is getting ready to set up a temporary alternate channel near the Francis Scott Key Bridge for important commercial ships. This move is a crucial step toward reopening the port of Baltimore, according to Capt. David O’Connell, the Federal On-Scene Coordinator for the Key Bridge Response 2024. The temporary channel will be marked with government lights and will have specific measurements for depth and clearance. While the safety zone around the bridge remains, mariners will receive updates via VHF marine channel 16. Entry into the safety zone requires permission, and compliance with directives from the COTP or designated representatives is mandatory.
