JERSEY CITY, NJ (VINnews) — An active shooter situation took place in Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon.

The story began with a shooting in Bayview Cemetery, with a police officer being shot in the shoulder. The wounded officer was transferred to Jersey City Medical Center where he passed away. At least one of the shooters then fled to a nearby store, from which the shooting continued.

According to CBS, the suspects were known to police, and were wanted in other homicides.

Multiple sources confirm that the intial shooting in the cemetery involved plainclothes officers. This indicates a possible undercover criminal investigation gone wrong.

The storefront from which the shooting continued has been verified to be located at 223 MLK Drive. According to a VIN news source, the Kosher store is owned by a Jewish Satmar family from Brooklyn.

As of 3 PM, it has been confirmed that the original officer that was shot in the cemetery has passed away. Two more officers were shot and are in stable condition. Additionally, one Jewish person was shot, and is in stable condition.

As of approximately 3:40 PM, it has been verified that the police gained entry into the store. There are at least 4 people confirmed deceased inside the store.

As of approximately 4:00 PM, it has been verified that there were at least 2 Jewish victims killed in the shooting.

There is an additonal Jewish victim that was shot, and is in stable conditon. This victim is expected to be discharged from the hospital shortly.

The Whitehouse reported that President Trump had been briefed on the shooting, and is continuing to monitor the situation.

The FBI joined the scene, and asked the public to stay away from the area.

 

ABC News reports that the shooting from the store has slowed down, and Police have begun to slowly advance towards the store. When police started approaching the store, some additional shots were reportedly still fired, which indicates that not all shooters are down.

One person from inside the store received treatment and talked to police. Up to 4 people were inside the store at the time of the shooting, who are currently being sought by police.
