There is good news for Maryland drivers who need to update their Maryland Real IDs: There is now more time to do so.

Officials explained to 11 News the process is relatively simple and can be shortened with an appointment.

Maryland drivers who need to update the documents that they have on file for the Real ID cards are getting a reprieve of sorts from the Motor Vehicle Administration, but officials said the time to act is now.

Most drivers try to avoid the MVA at all costs, but for this situation, drivers are going to have to make the trip.

"If you want to use your state driver's license or ID card to enter a federal facility or to board an airplane, you have to meet those standards," Chrissy Nizer, Maryland Department of Transportation MVA administrator, said.

Nizer is talking about the Real ID, which has standards for secure identification.

Back in December, close to 80,000 drivers were told they needed to update their Real ID cards with proper documentation, but so far, a little more than half have complied.

"We know that it may take a minute to get your birth certificate or passport handy or the other documents required, so, you want to give you that extra time," Nizer said.

This month had been the deadline for those drivers, but the MVA is now extending that to July 3.

"They actually gave me a call yesterday during the daytime and asked me to confirm that I was coming in today, and I have a confirmation number. Will see how it turns out the end," driver Fred Wilks said.

Drivers updating their Real IDs said the process is easy and straightforward.

Anyone can make an appointment online to cut down wait times.

"My husband went through this on Monday, and he went to Essex and he told me if he didn't have an appointment, the people that didn't have an appointment there was a huge line," driver Bern Hoff-Wilde said.

Real IDs will be enforced starting Oct. 1, 2020. If you don't have one, your license will be recalled.

In order to get them up to date, drivers need proof of age and proof of residence.
