BALTIMORE (WBFF)-- A Code Blue extreme health alert has been declared on Baltimore from Sunday until Tuesday.

The weekend forecast calls for snow, rain and single-digit temperatures.

"I encourage residents to stay indoors, especially those most vulnerable to cold," said Interim Health Commissioner Mary Beth Haller. 

Haller says these extreme temperatures can permanently injure or kill.

"Please be sure to check on neighbors who you think may be at risk to ensure that they have heat and power, and take care to shelter pets appropriately," said Haller.

City agencies will be working to provide meals to at-risk senior citizens, home weatherization services and energy assistance.

Baltimore City Health Departments says the city has had three Code Blue-related deaths this season.

Homeless shelters will have extended hours and bed capacity. During this Code Blue period, shelters will be open 24 hours .

Safe cold weather tips include wearing multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing, wearing a hat and scarf, avoiding alcoholic beverages, staying hydrated, keeping space heaters away from children and flammable objects and not leaving a car running in a closed space.

Residents can call 311 if a they are without heat or power for assistance.
