The Conference of Presidents (CoP) meeting in Jerusalem, Israel, this week is hearing from scores of experts in security, politics and a wide variety of current topics affecting Israel and Jews around the world.
On Monday afternoon, AMIT President Debbie Moed introduced Dr Yossi Vardi to head a presentation, "Incredible Insights into Israel Today and the Future."
Sandisk CEO Shahar Bar-Or was one of the featured speakers on the panel concerning innovation. Bar-Or has been involved with encouraging science, math and especially computer education in all sectors of Israeli society.
Dr. Jihad El-Sana, affiliated with the Department of Computer Science, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Science from BGU. In 1995, he won a Fulbright Scholarship for doctoral studies in the US. In 1999, he earned a PhD in Computer Science from the State University of New York, Stony Brook.
El-Sana heads the department's Visual Media Lab, which hosts various research projects in Computer Graphics, Image Processing, Augmented Reality, Computational Geometry, and Document Image Analysis.
However, at the CoP forum, El-Sana's cousin's daughter was the center of attention. Fifteen year-old Sereen, from a Bedouin community near Beer Sheva, is studying computers and science courses in an Israeli university. Sereen was asked how she is accepted at the school, if she has friends. Her response, saying her fellow students are "Achim," brothers, was appreciated by the audience.
Jihad El-Sana is socially active and has been involved in various NGO projects geared toward the development of the Arab society in the Negev, through education. He is currently serving as the head of The Academic Association for the development of the Arab Society in the Negev (AHD) and has been among the driving force behind the establishment of the AHD High School for Science.
Sereen opted for an Israeli program, rather than attending the AHD school. Especially encouraged by her mother to succeed in her studies, Sereen said she does not have much time for games, as she is busy studying. Asked what she sees in her future, what she wants to be in 70 years. Sereen said she wants to be head of a company. Smiling audience members were nodding their heads, assuming the bright and talented young woman had great possibilities in her future.
