Jerusalem, Israel - Jan. 2, 2018 - The World Zionist Organization (WZO) held its fifteenth International Conference for Diaspora Rabbanim and Community leaders in Yerushalayim on Yud-Daled Teves. Opening day of the conference based at the Ramada Hotel, included a long list of impressive speakers on a full schedule.
Representatives of 40 countries, listened as HaRav Yosef Carmel repeated the pasuk from Zecharia and mentioned today's "kibbutz galuyot" and "miracle of our time with so many learning Torah in Hebrew in Eretz Yisrael."
Opening the morning with WZO's Yitzhak Stiglitz were the Chief Rabbi of Rome, HaRav Dr. Snmuel Di Segni and HaRav Chaim Kantorovitz of England.
The first panel included, Rabbi Moshe Dratch, executive director of the Rabbinical Council of America, Israeli Chief Rabbi David Lau, Rabbi Dr. Avraham Steinberg, medical ethics expert and director of the Encyclopedia Talmudit, Israeli Supreme Court Judge Neal Hendel, and HaRav Pinchas Goldschmidt, Chief Rabbi of Moscow.
During lunch, Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett spoke. Bennett mentioned his parents who were in San Francisco during the 1960's and their path to religious observance after the Six-Day War, and stressed the importance of outreach to Diaspora youth today.
The afternoon panel focused on security issues of with MK Eli Ben Dahan, and former IDF Generals Amos Yadin and Yaakov Amidror, both of whom are active in Israeli security think tanks.
The final panel of the day dealt with current issues including antisemitism. Yaakov Hagoel of WZO introduced and journalist Tzivka Klein who moderated the panel which included HaRav Chaim Eisenberg, Chief Rabbi of Austria, and Bar Ilan University Islamic expert Dr. Mordechai Kedar.
During the dinner meal, HaRav Moshe Sabag, of the Great Synagogue of Paris, gave the devar Torah.
All presentations were in Hebrew. More speeches in the evening and the music of Yonatan Razel concluded the first day's program.
Included in the photo essay with international Rabbanim with long standing ties to Baltimore, are Rabbi and Mrs Marvin Pachino, who were part of the RCA Israel delegation, participating in the opening day program.
The conference continues with touring on Tuesday, and on Wednesday more lectures and talks on topics based on the celebration of 70 years of State of Israel.
