"American Jewry became assimilated because the parents were forced to work on Shabbat, so 6 million Jews lost their connection [to Judaism]," United Torah Judaism MK Yisrael Eichler says in a debate over a bill seeking to bar commerce on the weekends.

United Torah Judaism MK Yisrael Eichler sparked controversy Thursday, saying work on the weekend was to blame for the assimilation of American Jewry.

The statement was made during a debate on the so-called supermarket bill, a legislative proposal that that would give the interior minister the authority to prevent commerce on Shabbat in certain cities.

The bill passed its first Knesset reading on Dec. 12 and is now being debated by the Knesset's Internal Affairs Committee, tasked with drafting it for its second and third readings.

"American Jewry became assimilated because the parents were forced to work on Shabbat, so 6 million Jews lost their connection [to Judaism]," he said. "President [Chaim] Herzog called the assimilation the 'silent holocaust' of American Jewry."

Eichler further warned that if the of the situation continues, "There would be nothing left of American Jewry except for those who observe the Shabbat. They and their descendants will be the only remaining Jews."

He urged the committee, "Do not force the Jews of the land of Israel to work on Shabbat and lose their Judaism."
