It’s 2016! Everybody and their brother has a Twitter handle or two.  The world we are in, both from a general perspective, as well as from a Jewish perspective, is spinning really fast these days. Every day brings change. The world of today is far different than the world of the 1970s and 1980s, and it is even different than it was a mere six months ago.

World events – politics, terrorism, technological advances, market volatility, European Union membership breaks, just to name a few – change from moment to moment with head-ache inducing speed. No longer do people wait for the morning paper to see what direction the world shifted; that information is available in an instantaneous play-by-play fashion via the world wide web, specifically via the call of the all-knowing blue bird known as Twitter. Not only is news reported there in real time, it is often made there.  Yes, it is more and more common for Twitter to be used by world leaders and politicians – as well as those wannabes – to post their messages, endorse ideas, knock down their opponents and otherwise let the world know that they are on top of their game.

The Jewish world – left, right and center alike -  has also been increasingly using the web, as well as Twitter, to opine to their masses. There is no shortage of Jewish websites of all types and stripes and no shortage of Twitter accounts, some with a handful of followers, some with tens of thousands, that pontificate, inform, opine and analyze everything that goes in the world of Orthodox Judaism and beyond.

There are many popular Jewish Twitter sites, such as  @BJLife, @YWN, @YiddishNews, @JTA and  @VINnews, each platform in their own style dominates the Orthodox Jewish population with their particular method of news reporting, commentary and updates that are relevant to the Orthodox Jewish population. From general news to Chasidic court news, from issues plaguing Jewish youth and Jewish families to Judaica sales and kosher recipes, each one has their unique flavor and their unique readership which follows – likes and responds to -  their every Tweet.

There are thousands of Orthodox Jewish Twitter accounts which have their finger on the pulse of the Jewish world in one way or another. Some have huge followings while some are unique to a certain segment of the population and thus have smaller followings.  Some cover their local region and some have a more global reach. All, in their own way, fill a void in the day-to-day life of Jews all over the world.

The world in general has a “love-hate” relationship with Twitter, and the Orthodox population is similarly inclined. It can be bothersome and invasive, yet the thrill of being up-to-date is strong and they keep coming back for more. Twitter feeds are checked multiple times per day, and it’s a habit that is hard to overcome. No longer is the Baltimore Sun with a cup of coffee the standard breakfast fare; it has been replaced by the morning “Twitter Feed”, as well as other social media and news feeds, which are at out fingertips -literally- to scroll through before we can start our day. (The coffee is still a morning staple though, albeit in many more flavors, strengths and prices than they were in the pre-Starbucks generations of Folgers and Sanka!)

The only question is which accounts to follow and which Twitter accounts to add to your favorites for breaking news and updates that best suits your particular brand of Orthodoxy.

No matter if your personal handle is @Chareidi, @CentristOrthodox or @ModernOrthodox, there is a Twitter handle that is perfect for you. All that’s missing is a @KosherCertification, but with time that will surely happen too!
