Baltimore, MD - Dec. 13, 2015 - On the 22nd of Kislev, 2015 Harav Zvi Dov Slanger, the Rosh Hayeshiva of Bais HaMedrash and Mesivta of Baltimore held a seudas hodaya marking seventy one years since his rescue from the Nazis, ym”sh. The seudah is held every year on the day that the famous Kastner Train arrived in Switzerland.
The Rosh Hayeshiva related how Adolf Eichmann, ym”sh, whose mission was to annihilate Hungarian Jewry conducted negotiations with Dr. Kastner and “guaranteed” safe transport of over 1600 Jews to Spain and then to Israel, in exchange for an agreed upon ransom. In reality, the destination of this transport was the Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp. Among the elite of Hungarian Jewry who were on that train were Hagaon Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, the Satmar Rebbe and Hagaon Harav Yonasson Schteiff, the Av Beis Din of Budapest.
The Rosh Hayeshiva conveyed to the talmidim messages of emunah and bitachon as he related to them stories depicting the existence in Bergen Belsen. He described the unimaginable horrors of life fraught with danger, of inhumane conditions, constant hunger, bitter cold and lack of sanitation. Descriptions of the evil and cruel treatment of the SS guards towards the concentration camp inmates. Of times when there seemed to be no hope and when many prepared to say Shema Yisrael and were ready to depart from olam hazeh and in the last moment they were miraculously saved.
Amazingly, said the Rosh Yeshiva, “in the depth of despair and darkness there emerged acts of inspirational Kiddush Shem Shamayim. These acts shine a bright light on the koach and ability of the Yiddishe neshama to withstand the most grueling nisyonos and transcend the harshest realities”.
The seudah concluded with the talmidim dancing joyously with the Rosh Yeshiva in giving thanks to the Ribono Shel Olam on this momentous occasion.
