Baltimore, August 18, 2025 – An apparent explosion on a ship near the Francis Scott Key Bridge was quickly brought under control, according to Baltimore City fire officials.
Fire department spokesperson John Marsh confirmed that no injuries were reported among the crew.
Witnesses said the vessel, loaded with coal, had just departed the CSX Coal Dock when the incident occurred. Mike Singer, a member of the Baltimore and Chesapeake Bay Shipwatchers group, noted that the explosion happened at 6:28 p.m. He added that coal ships typically leave the dock four to six times each week, often carrying crews of up to 30 people.
