Baltimore, MD – March 21, 2025 – Baltimore’s speed camera program has long frustrated local drivers, but the latest fiasco on Cross Country Boulevard shows just how careless enforcement has become. A local community member recently received a ticket for exceeding a 25 MPH speed limit—despite a clearly posted 30 mph sign at the location. So which is it? And more importantly, how many other drivers were fined under the same confusing setup?
That same resident contacted Baltimore Jewish Life (BJL) to share what had happened, prompting BJL to begin investigating. Shortly afterward, the resident also reached out to Baltimore City Councilman Yitzy Schleifer, who stepped in to press the Department of Transportation for answers.
In an email thread shared with BJL, Schleifer questioned city officials about how such a discrepancy could occur and demanded that the issue be corrected. It turns out the vendor responsible for the speed camera had mistakenly installed 30 MPH signage where the legal limit was actually 25 MPH. That error resulted in citations being issued to drivers who were, according to the signs, within the speed limit.
Thanks to Schleifer’s persistence, the city confirmed that all citations issued at that location will be voided, and the incorrect signs will be replaced with ones that reflect the legal 25 MPH limit. The vendor will also face financial penalties for the mistake.
While this outcome is a relief to those unfairly ticketed, it raises broader concerns: How many other cameras across the city are enforcing incorrect speed limits? How many citations have been issued in error, and quietly paid?
This incident is a stark reminder that oversight matters—and that even systems meant to promote safety can fall short if no one’s watching. Thanks to the vigilance of one resident and the intervention of Councilman Schleifer, at least this stretch of road will be made right. But citywide, questions still remain.
