Baltimore, MD – March 21, 2025 – Baltimore’s speed camera program has long frustrated local drivers, but the latest fiasco on Cross Country Boulevard shows just how careless enforcement has become. A local community member recently received a ticket for exceeding a 25 MPH speed limit—despite a clearly posted 30 mph sign at the location. So which is it? And more importantly, how many other drivers were fined under the same confusing setup?
That same resident contacted Baltimore Jewish Life (BJL) to share what had happened, prompting BJL to begin investigating. Shortly afterward, the resident also reached out to Baltimore City Councilman Yitzy Schleifer, who stepped in to press the Department of Transportation for answers.
In an email thread shared with BJL, S...

Baltimore, MD - March 2005 - The years a bochur spends building himself in yeshiva are the most precious of his life.
This is where he builds everything—his foundation in Torah, his middos, his hashkafos, and his entire identity as a ben Torah. These are the years that shape his future, and we have to make the most of them.
At Mesivta Shaarei Chaim, we give everything to provide a growth-oriented environment where bochurim turn themselves into true B’nei Torah. Now, we’re ready to write our next chapter and move into an amazing new building. But we need your help to get there.

Columbia University will cede to President Trump’s far-reaching demands in negotiations over $400 million in federal funding he revoked this month, according to a memo from the school to the administration.
Columbia agreed to ban masks, empower 36 campus police officers with new powers to arrest students and appoint a senior vice provost with broad authority to oversee the department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies as well as the Center for Palestine Studies.
Control of the Middle East department has been a central dispute in negotiations and sparks controversy across campus. Faculty at Columbia and nationwide are expressing deep reservations about letting the federal government dictate how they can operate an academic department. The new vic...

BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Baltimore County, MD - March 21, 2025 - The Baltimore County Police Department has seen an increase in daytime burglaries involving traveling groups of thieves. Over 30 cases have been reported in the first three months of 2025. These groups typically operate in small, separate teams, often consisting of two to three women. They primarily target single-family homes in neighborhoods, where residents tend to be older and have minimal video surveillance.
The groups often arrive in a suspect vehicle driven by a male accomplice, who drops off the women in the neighborhood. The women typically fabricate a story, usually claiming they want to buy something from the property owner. While one person distracts the homeowner, the others will force entry into a home through a side or back door. Thei...
During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.
President Donald Trump announced Friday that Boeing will build the Air Force’s future fighter jet, which the Pentagon says will have stealth and penetration capabilities that far exceed those of its current fleet and is essential in a potential conflict with China.
Known as Next Generation Air Dominance, or NGAD, the manned jet will serve as quarterback to a fleet of future drone aircraft designed to be able to penetrate the air defenses of China and any other potential foes. The initial contract to proceed with production on a version for the Air Force version is worth an estimated $20 billion.
Trump announced the award at the White House with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hegseth said the future fleet “sends a very clear, direct message to our allies that we’re not ...

Washington, D.C. - March 20, 2025 - The US has asked Israel not to strike Houthi targets in Yemen, a source told the Jerusalem Post.
"Leave it to us" was the US request.
Israeli officials are holding discussions on whether to respond to the recent missiles launched from Yemen, but the assumption is that, at this point, Israel will accept the US request.
Two missiles were sent from Yemen to Israel on Thursday, marking the first time in two months the Houthis had targeted the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem areas. Both, however, were intercepted by Israel's air defense systems, and did not land in Israeli territory.
Earlier in the day, the US struck Houthi targets in Yemen's port city of Hodeidah.
Sources told Ynet that the US requested that Israel...
Washington, D.C. - March 20, 2025 - President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday to scale down the Department of Education — a move that is expected to spur lawsuits challenging the directive and will likely require Congressional approval.
Trump frequently has discussed plans to nix the Department of Education dating back to the campaign trail, and said in September 2024 that he wanted to cut down on the federal government’s influence over education to "stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth."
"Everybody knows it's right, and we have to get our children educated," Trump said Thursday. "We're not doing well with the world of education in this country, and we haven't for a l...
Baltimore, MD - March 20, 2025 - Federal authorities said the Maryland Transportation Authority failed to conduct an assessment of the Francis Scott Key Bridge that could have warned of its vulnerability from a vessel collision, the National Transportation Safety Board announced Thursday afternoon.
National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy provided an update Thursday afternoon to the investigation of the Key Bridge collapse.
Homendy said the MDTA did not run the vulnerability assessment calculation on the Key Bridge, and as of October 2024, still hasn't done so for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
Homendy said had the assessment been completed, "the MDTA would've known the risk and could've taken action to prevent the collapse."
Homendy said the NTSB had...
