Jerusalem, Israel - Feb. 6, 2025 - To mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day the Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo in Jerusalem, Israel, hosts an annual educational memorial evening.
Head of Mission Ines Demiri welcomed the guests who arrived despite the cold rainy winter night. She quoted from Elie Wiesel, "I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides."
This year the event highlighted the Shoah story of Shelia Altaraz. Efrat Baruch-Altaraz authored her story of survival in the book "Macedonian Sun." The book was first published in Hebrew and is not available in English.
Lea Micha, Head of Central, Eastern, and Balkan Europe at Yad Vashem gave a historical background. She also quoted Wiesel, "In those times there was darkness everywhere. On heaven and on earth, all the gates of compassion seemed to have been closed. The killer killed and the Jews died and the outside world adopted an attitude either of complicity or of indifference. Only a few had the courage to care. These few men and women were vulnerable, afraid, helpless - what made them different from their fellow citizens? Why were there so few?... Let us remember. What hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor but the silence of the bystander..."
All alone as a little girl, her family murdered, Shelia was one of the Jews rescued by Albanians. She was able to come to Israel, marry, rebuild her life, and is proud of her now extended family.
Ten years ago Shelia Altaraz was honored to light a torch at Yad Vashem on Yom Hashoah.
Her story was given in Hebrew and has English subtitles.
