Towson, MD - Jan. 6, 2025 — With the first significant winter weather event of 2025 expected to impact Baltimore County Sunday night into Monday morning, the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) is prepared to ensure the safety of residents.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight until to 1 a.m. Tuesday for much of the Baltimore region. Forecasters are projecting between 5 and 10 inches of snow with up to 12 inches possible in isolated spots if heavy banding sets up in the area.

Due to the expected winter weather, the main office of the Department of Public Works and Transportation, the landfill and drop-off centers will all be closed on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. There will also be no trash or recycling pickup and services. Regular trash and recycling services for those who missed their pickups will resume next week. In addition, there will be no CountyRide or Towson Loop Circulator service on Monday.

The county has budgeted $8.5 million in Fiscal Year 2025 for snow removal operations, and DPWT has up to 423 pieces of equipment and 491 crew members at its disposal to treat and plow 2,700 miles of county roads. Along with equipment and personnel, DPWT has a total of 91,600 tons of salt stored at 17 sites across the county, along with an ample supply of brine at its disposal.

Priority for DPWT’s initial plowing operations centers on main roads, followed by feeder roads and finally community streets.  Approximate plowing times vary by snowfall event, but generally, it takes around 24 hours for DPWT crews to plow all County roads during a snowfall of less than 6 inches. During a snowfall of more than 6 inches, it can take 48 hours for crews to plow all County roads. Please note the County does not plow or salt state roads, private roads, or alleys.

When severe weather strikes, Baltimore County’s real-time weather updates site is a one-stop resource for snow preparation and recovery efforts. Find breaking storm updates, snow route status, view current traffic conditions, report storm-related problems, and more.

After the storm, you can report unplowed streets using the BaltCoGo app online at BaltimoreCountyMd.gov/Stormfighter or call our Bureau of Highways at 410-887-3560.

Here are some winter readiness tips to help keep people safe during a winter weather event:

  • Stay off roads if possible.
  • Winterize homes by installing weather stripping, insulation and storm windows. Prepare vehicles for cold weather use before winter arrives.
  • Prepare for weather-related emergencies, including power outages.
  • It’s best to clear sidewalks as soon as it’s safe to do so after the snowfall has stopped. Some locales mandate 24 hours after snowfall has ceased. Baltimore County law—Roads, Bridges and Sidewalks, 18-3-107 Removal of Snow and Ice—states that sidewalks must be shoveled within 24 hours after a snowstorm. Baltimore County relies on reports from the public when sidewalks have not been cleared.
  • It’s important not to shovel onto public streets or a neighbor’s property.
  • For those with a driveway, it’s often best to wait until after the plows have cleared the road.
  • Bridges and overpasses typically freeze before roads—approach with caution.
  • BaltCo 311 allows people to quickly report problems or request a service in Baltimore County.
