There is a concept in chassidus that all parts of a group become elevated when a piece of that group elevates itself. The Baal HaTanya, for example, discusses how when an animal is offered as a korban, the entire species gets an aliyah . The same is true when it comes to us and the performance of a Mitzvah. When you (a piece of the group) perform a particular mitzvah, EVERYONE (on some level) gets an elevation.
The same concept would apply to inanimate objects as well, as we know that when the sea split by Krias Yam Suf, all water around the world experienced it's own "splitting."
If you think about it, when Yaakov Avinu rested on a rock, the entire "species" of rock - the entire rock family - experienced an aliyah , an elevation. Every single rock was positively impacted in some way.
Yet, something absolutely amazing happened. Our Sages teach us that each rock said, "The Tzadik should rest his head on me!"
Wait a second. If Yaakov rested on one rock, ALL the rocks got an spiritual elevation. So why did each rock argue and say, "The Tzadik should rest his head on me!" ? Who cares which rock Yaakov rested on?
We learn an incredible lesson from the rocks. It's true, when Yaakov rested on one, they all got an aliyah . But they weren't satisfied with that. It was nice, for sure, but it wasn't enough. Each one wanted to be the one that not just experienced an aliyah for being part of the rock family; rather, each one wanted to be THE ONE to experience Yaakov first hand.
Yes, when other yidden do Mitzvos and learn Torah, the entirety of Am Yisroel is uplifted. But the aliyah that comes from that is free and automatic. A greater aliyah comes when we - like the rock - want (and do) it firsthand!
Don't just become uplifted. Instead, be the one to uplift! You be the one who learns. You be the one that does the Mitzvah. You be the one that dresses tznius . You be the one that davens with respect.
I once heard an amazing quote (R' Stern, Toronto): "Don't be the guy who knows THE GUY, be THE GUY yourself!"
Have a wonderful day!
