Whenever I have the zechus to go to the Torah Umesorah convention, I feel inspired and elevated that I am part of the world of Chinuch. As I arrived Thursday afternoon, I caught the end of the Executive Expo where Mr. Ralph Herzka was surrounded by numerous executive directors. They had just finished an “Elevator Pitch” where several mosdos were awarded $10K for an original idea for their mosod. The booths displayed so many vendors who service mosdos, from insurance to architect design and more. Big decisions were being made there.
Wherever I walked there was Chinuch: Booths showcasing various curricula or ideas for schools; sessions where hundreds of mechanchim were gaining yet another valuable skill to help propel their talmidim; keynote sessions addressing some of the issues facing our talmidim and questions and answers with our venerated gedolim. On Thursday night there was a keynote session addressing technology with hundreds of mechanchim in the room representing tens of thousands of our dear talmidim and talmidos.
It began to quiet down after 12:45 AM, as I made my way to my room in the hotel. A new rebbe from out of town who I knew from years ago stopped me and asked “Do you have a few minutes?” To which I replied “Of course,” modeling what so many of the other mechanchim have done for me. “So I heard that you have been a rebbe for many years, and I wanted to discuss how to make my classes even better. I have been going around asking different people about their classes”. We sat there for a half hour, going through the various struggles he was facing, some of them quite common in the world of Chinuch. Hopefully I was able to help him somewhat, and at least I was able to validate his concerns.
It was close to 1:30am as I entered my room, and I couldn’t help but think how amazing that experience was. In the same convention, there are million dollar financial decisions, keynote speeches that could improve thousands of talmidim and the ‘simple discussion’ of how to make a fourth grade classroom a bit better.
But really it’s simple: There is so much in common between these seemingly different areas, because each person who attends the convention, or who dedicates his or her life to chinuch, has the same goal - to give all the children the foundation that they could build upon to become a sparkling edifice!
