Baltimore, MD - Oct. 31, 2024 - With the general election less than one week away, Baltimore City officials are reassuring residents their votes are secure.
“Well, in Baltimore City, we have not had those issues of tampering with ballot boxes. We feel pretty secure,” said Armstead Jones, director of the Baltimore City Board of Elections. “We have safety measures in place. I won’t discuss those, but we feel pretty good.”
Mayor Brandon Scott also took a question regarding election security Wednesday afternoon, saying:
“We are feeling good. When you talk about elections and humans, things happen. You just have to be prepared to fill in people where you need to. We know the police, and everyone is ready, the coordination is there, and we look forward to a peaceful and smooth election day in Baltimore.”
Jones told 11 News they’re looking to secure roughly 2,700 election judges for the presidential election.
“We’ve increased the number by 400 or 500 to make sure that we don’t have those issues of lack of substitute judges,” Jones said. ” We had an issue in the primary where quite a few, some hundreds, did not show up. So, I just want to make sure that’s covered.”
Jones said he’s been working the elections in Baltimore City for roughly 17 years.
“One thing, all of our processes are open to the public,” Jones told 11 News. “The scanning of the ballots (on) election night will be done (in our building). And, of course, for our canvassing, when ballots are open, it’s open to the public as well. We have an open process, and I feel (very) comfortable with the measures we have in place.”
