Baltimore, MD - Sept. 27, 2024  -  With the approach of Rosh Hashana, when we partake of fresh fruits and other traditional foods, STAR-K reminds everyone about the need to check many of the items carefully prior to use.

Checking instructions for all Rosh Hashana Simanim are listed below.

For your convenience, we are also including information and links about Yoshon, as well as the Halachos of Fasting, Schach Guidance and Sukkos-related videos — basically all the information you need to prepare for the Yamim Tovim.

STAR-K wishes everyone a k'siva v'chasima tova and a sweet new year!

ROSH HASHANA SIMANIM CHECKING INSTRUCTIONS

APPLES/BEETS/CARROTS/POMEGRANATES: No checking required.

DATES*: Open a few dates in each container and visually inspect. If no insects can be seen, the rest may be eaten without further checking.

FIGS*: Open each one and check carefully for infestation (typically wasps, beetles or worms). NOTE: Figs are particularly difficult to check.

 * Checking instructions for dates and figs apply even if they have a hechsher, due to the possibility of improper storage.

GOLDEN RAISINS:

Should not be used at this time due to infestation and the difficulty involved in checking them. (There is no concern with red (black) raisins or currants. Keep these properly sealed and store in a cool dry place, as improper storage can lead to infestation.)

BLACK-EYED PEAS:

Preparation

  • Dried peas should first be boiled in water. After they have been fully cooked, allow the peas to soak in the water for 2-3 hours. The peas will then swell and the peel will become translucent. Then check as instructed below.
  • Canned or frozen peas may be checked straight out of the can/bag; there is no need to boil or soak.

Checking Instructions

  1. Inspect the peas for holes or dark-colored stains, as these may indicate an insect beneath the thin peel.
  2. If there is a dark spot on the peel, remove the thin skin and check if there is a cavity with a bug in it.

NOTE: The black "eye" spot is not a sign of infestation. Similarly, orange-colored stains on the surface are not signs of infestation. Only dark or black stains are of concern.

LEEKS:

Examine the outside for any leaf miner trails. Check in between the layers for thrips or other insects.

SPINACH:

Check using the Thrip Cloth Method.

THRIP CLOTH METHOD:

  1. Wash the produce well. Fill a basin with warm water and a non-toxic dishwasher detergent so the water feels "slippery."
  2. Add produce to the basin and agitate vigorously in the solution for 15 seconds.
  3. Remove the produce from the basin and shake excess water over the basin. Set produce aside.
  4. Line a colander with a thrip cloth and pour the water through it.
  5. Place thrip cloth over a light box and check for insects.
  6. If insects are found, repeating steps 1-5. This can be repeated up to 3 times. If insects are still found on the third try, the produce should not be used.

GREEN CABBAGE:

For fresh cabbage: Separate all leaves and wash well. Then check using the Thrip Cloth Method.

For stuffed cabbage: After freezing the head, defrost and separate all leaves and wash them well. Then check using the Thrip Cloth Method.

For green cabbage only: If one does not have a thrip cloth, cabbage may be checked carefully leaf by leaf, using a lightbox or under a strong light.

HONEY: Pure honey does not need a hechsher (Clover, Wildflower, Blossom, Orange, etc., are types of honey, not flavors). Flavored honey needs a hechsher.

Baltimore, MD -- Dec. 3, 2025 - Baltimore police Commissioner Richard Worley discussed the city’s significant reduction in homicides and shootings in 2025, attributing the success to partnerships and community cooperation. With just under one month left in the year, Baltimore City has experienced 127 homicides, which is 45 fewer than this time last year. The city has also seen a reduction in nonfatal shootings, nearly 25% down compared to last year. Worley spoke on the “T.J. Smith” show Tuesday morning. When asked about the historic reduction in homicides, Worley credited agencies and officers across the city and state working together. “That’s still too many. One is too many. But the lowest recorded since 1970, for a year, was 171,” Worley said. &ldq...

Baltimore, MD - Dec. 3, 2025  - Concerns over voter eligibility in Maryland is prompting a measure which would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration. Del. Ryan Nawrocki believes the current system is simply an honor system. "Right now the way it works is you go in and say "yep that's me and I'm a citizen" and that's it," he said. This issue gained attention following the arrest of Iowa school superintendent Ian Roberts, an illegal immigrant who was a registered voter in Maryland for years. Del. Matt Morgan criticized the state's voter roll maintenance, saying, "The State Board of Elections never cleans its voter rolls, so there could be thousands of people on here we have no idea." The Maryland Freedom Caucus is advocating for stricter ...

Saudi Arabia has delivered a major financial infusion to the Palestinian Authority (PA) as the PA struggles to function under mounting budget shortfalls and prolonged limits on revenue transfers from Israel. For more stories from The Media Line go to themedialine.org The $90 million grant, handed over at the Saudi Embassy in Amman, is intended to keep basic services running in the West Bank, where many civil servants have been paid only partial salaries for months.  The contribution comes at a moment when the PA is facing its most severe financial pressure in years. Israel’s Finance Ministry, led by Bezalel Smotrich, has repeatedly blocked the monthly transfer of tax revenue that Israel collects on Palestinian imports under longstanding economic arrangeme...

Baltimore, MD - Dec. 3, 2025 - The fully autonomous ride-hailing service Waymo is coming to Baltimore, the company announced Wednesday. Baltimore is among four cities in the company's latest expansion. The other cities include St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Waymo posted a statement online Wednesday that it will work with state officials to create a regulatory path for deployment. "Maryland has a long, proud tradition of embracing innovation and driving discovery. This new partnership with Waymo marks the next chapter in that story — and it's going to help spur growth, make our roads safer and get more Marylanders from where they live to where opportunity lies," Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said in Waymo's statement. "Together, we will continue our push to make M...
Annapolis, MD - Dec. 3, 2025 - As audits stack up this year revealing gaps in protocols, systems, and a lack of oversight in some state agencies, Gov. Wes Moore has a message to his agency heads: fix the problems. Most recently, a state audit revealed 42 state offices spent a total of $8.5 billion last year with minimal oversight. That audit came on the heels of a State Highway Administration audit detailing $360 million in unauthorized spending for federal projects, and a separate Social Services Administration audit revealing a lack of protections for foster care children in Maryland. In November, during a Joint Audit and Evaluation Committee briefing, auditors noted that 34% of audits had repeated findings appear in the next probe, as of June 2025; 10% were re...

Annapolis, MD - Dec. 3, 2025 - The United States is suing Maryland's top election official for access to an unredacted version of the most recent state voter roll. In a complaint filed Monday, the Justice Department alleges that it requested a "current electronic copy of its computerized statewide voter registration list, containing 'all fields.'" This would include voters' full names, birthdates, home addresses, state driver's license numbers, or the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. Attorney General Pam Bondi made the request of the Administrator of the State Board of Elections, Jared DeMarinis, in mid-July. According to the court filing, DeMarinis refused, "directing the Department to a website where 'copies of publicly available data i...

Baltimore, MD - Dec. 3, 2025 - Maryland could have to pay upwards of $300 million in 2027 to meet new federal costs to deliver food assistance to residents, with state that have high rates of administrative errors — like Maryland — having to kick in more. That is just one of the big-ticket expenses that states will have to take on to implement changes in HR 1, the congressional budget reconciliation bill better known as the One, Big Beautiful Bill Act, state officials told lawmakers Tuesday. In a virtual joint meeting of the Senate Finance and the House Health and Government Operations committees, legislators were told that changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid will cost the state millions to implement. Finance Chair Pamela Beidle (D-An...
Israel is preparing for a significant escalation in Lebanon following Hezbollah’s continued military buildup in the country, Kan News reported. According to the report, Israel presented US envoy Morgan Ortagus with evidence of Hezbollah’s ongoing entrenchment and expansion in Lebanon, warning that continued activity will lead to responses from the IDF. The US is attempting to calm tensions, but Israeli sources say an escalation “appears inevitable.” Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz is expected to arrive in Israel next week, likely as part of US efforts to prevent an escalation. On Tuesday, at an Israel Hayom conference in New York, Waltz stressed that, "Israel has the right to defend itself" and that Hezbollah must be d...

The Trump administration announced Tuesday it has paused all immigration applications, including green cards and US citizenship processing, for immigrants from 19 non-European countries, citing national security and public safety concerns, Reuters reported. The pause applies to countries already subjected to partial travel bans in June, further tightening restrictions on immigration, a central feature of President Donald Trump’s political platform. The list includes Afghanistan and Somalia. An official memorandum cited last week’s attack on US National Guard members in Washington, in which an Afghan man was arrested as a suspect. One Guard member was killed and another critically wounded. Since returning to office in January, Trump has prioritized immigra...
