Baltimore, MD - Sept. 27, 2024  -  With the approach of Rosh Hashana, when we partake of fresh fruits and other traditional foods, STAR-K reminds everyone about the need to check many of the items carefully prior to use.

Checking instructions for all Rosh Hashana Simanim are listed below.

STAR-K wishes everyone a k'siva v'chasima tova and a sweet new year!

ROSH HASHANA SIMANIM CHECKING INSTRUCTIONS

APPLES/BEETS/CARROTS/POMEGRANATES: No checking required.

DATES*: Open a few dates in each container and visually inspect. If no insects can be seen, the rest may be eaten without further checking.

FIGS*: Open each one and check carefully for infestation (typically wasps, beetles or worms). NOTE: Figs are particularly difficult to check.

 * Checking instructions for dates and figs apply even if they have a hechsher, due to the possibility of improper storage.

GOLDEN RAISINS:

Should not be used at this time due to infestation and the difficulty involved in checking them. (There is no concern with red (black) raisins or currants. Keep these properly sealed and store in a cool dry place, as improper storage can lead to infestation.)

BLACK-EYED PEAS:

Preparation

  • Dried peas should first be boiled in water. After they have been fully cooked, allow the peas to soak in the water for 2-3 hours. The peas will then swell and the peel will become translucent. Then check as instructed below.
  • Canned or frozen peas may be checked straight out of the can/bag; there is no need to boil or soak.

Checking Instructions

  1. Inspect the peas for holes or dark-colored stains, as these may indicate an insect beneath the thin peel.
  2. If there is a dark spot on the peel, remove the thin skin and check if there is a cavity with a bug in it.

NOTE: The black "eye" spot is not a sign of infestation. Similarly, orange-colored stains on the surface are not signs of infestation. Only dark or black stains are of concern.

LEEKS:

Examine the outside for any leaf miner trails. Check in between the layers for thrips or other insects.

SPINACH:

Check using the Thrip Cloth Method.

THRIP CLOTH METHOD:

  1. Wash the produce well. Fill a basin with warm water and a non-toxic dishwasher detergent so the water feels "slippery."
  2. Add produce to the basin and agitate vigorously in the solution for 15 seconds.
  3. Remove the produce from the basin and shake excess water over the basin. Set produce aside.
  4. Line a colander with a thrip cloth and pour the water through it.
  5. Place thrip cloth over a light box and check for insects.
  6. If insects are found, repeating steps 1-5. This can be repeated up to 3 times. If insects are still found on the third try, the produce should not be used.

GREEN CABBAGE:

For fresh cabbage: Separate all leaves and wash well. Then check using the Thrip Cloth Method.

For stuffed cabbage: After freezing the head, defrost and separate all leaves and wash them well. Then check using the Thrip Cloth Method.

For green cabbage only: If one does not have a thrip cloth, cabbage may be checked carefully leaf by leaf, using a lightbox or under a strong light.

HONEY: Pure honey does not need a hechsher (Clover, Wildflower, Blossom, Orange, etc., are types of honey, not flavors). Flavored honey needs a hechsher.

Bodkim and askanim from across the country convened for chizuk, professional networking, and discussions on emerging issues and industry developments  New York, NY - July 9, 2026 - It’s a process most people barely think about when dropping off  suits, sweaters, coats, or even tablecloths at a shatnez laboratory. Yet for the approximately 150 shatnez testers in the U.S. who inspect materials for mixtures of wool and linen, it is painstaking, meticulous work requiring extensive training, experience, and unwavering attention to detail. It’s a craft that Rav Yosef Sayagh knows inside out. A world-renowned expert on hilchos shatnez, he has spent nearly 36 years in the field and trained approximately 250 bodkim to identify wool and linen under microscopes using specializ...

Dor Holech VeDor Ba When I was born 80 years ago, my parents had three teenage children. All have now passed away, my sister at the age of 96½. This marks the end of that era. Many of you know that we come from Montgomery, Alabama, the Heart of Dixie. I was fortunate to go away to yeshiva, but what was it like in those years—the 1940s, before I was born? In short, what type of Jewish environment did my big sister have growing up? One year ago, my daughter Shani decided the two of us should go visit Elsie. She said, "Let's go while she is alert and able to appreciate our visit." She bought the tickets and made all the arrangements. I want to share with you what my sister told me about growing up in the Oberstein home long ago. First of all, the grandparents lived in t...
Jerusalem, Israel - July 9, 2026 - Koach Eitan, an Israeli nonprofit supporting individuals and families living with stroke, brain injury and aphasia, won a $10,000 grant at the Nonprofit Navigator Conference in Jerusalem, Israel, after being selected as one of four winners in a "Shark Tank"-style pitch competition. His wife, Leora, initially created a Facebook page to update family and friends on his recovery and share the realities their family faced. That effort gradually evolved into Koach Eitan, which today...

Baltimore, MD - July 9, 2026 - A quiet Wednesday evening commute turned into a scene of utter devastation when a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus lost control on Reisterstown Road, striking nearly a dozen vehicles before crashing into a commercial building. The chaotic, chain-reaction pileup triggered a massive emergency response, left dozens injured, and is causing traffic delays throughout the area today. The incident began just before 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, when an MTA bus traveling along the busy Reisterstown Road corridor suddenly lost control. Over a span of several blocks between Old Court Road and McHenry Avenue, the transit bus plowed through traffic, striking 11 vehicles in its path. The destructive sequence finally came to a halt in the 1500 block of Reisterst...
US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday evening announced that its forces have begun launching strikes against Iranian targets. The confirmation came after explosions were heard in Iran. The explosions were reported in Bandar Abbas and in Chabahar, among other places. “At the direction of the Commander in Chief, US Central Command forces have started conducting additional strikes against Iran to further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," said CENTCOM. “The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway," it added. An Israeli official told Al-Arabiya that the US had notified Israel it would car...
Parsha Hashavua
Rabbi Dovid Fink - Parshas Pinchas: It's Not Just What We Say...

There are many places in the Torah where we see the effect of different types of behavior.  Anger inevitably leads to mistakes, kindness can have positive consequences for generations and humility keeps one from losing sight of what’s right and wrong.  Parshas Pinchas contains a far more subtle but unmistakable lesson.

After counting all the Shevatim and their progeny we are introduced to the Bnos Tzlafchad.  These daughters brought to Moshe Rabeinu’s attention the apparent inequity in that they were not going to have a chelek in Eretz Yisroel because their father had died in the Midbar and chalakim were only being given out according to the male lineage.  (Tzlafchad had no sons) Moshe had to ask Hashem what should be done about their seemingly legitimate concern.  (Pinchas 27:5) Hashem responded by instructing Moshe that the daughters should indeed inherit in their father’s place.  (27:6)

This story stands in stark contrast to what happened to the Ben Ish Mitzri at the end of Parshas Emor.  Boiled down to its bare essence, both the Ben Ish Mitzri and the Bnos Tzlafchad had essentially the same complaint.  The Ben Ish Mitzri, who was Jewish by virtue of his mother being a Jewess, was not assigned a chelek in Eretz Yisroel because his father was a Mitzri and chalakim were being given out by fathers’ lineage.  Therefore, the Ben Ish Mitzri is denied a chelek, curses Hashem and ends up receiving S’kila. (Death by Stoning) (Emor 24:14) How can practically identical complaints give rise to such different outcomes?

A careful reading of these two narratives yields an unmistakable conclusion.  The Bnos Tzlafchad  “approached”  Moshe Rabeinu. (Pinchas 27:1) They “stood” before him, Elazar Hakohen and all the Nisiyim and presented their predicament and asked for an Eitza. (27:2,3) They received a positive response.  The Ben Ish Mitzri came out and Vayinatzu BaMachane – they were fighting in the camp and then he cursed the name of Hashem.  Two wholly different dispositions in bringing basically the same issue forward.  The B’nos Tzlafchad talking humbly and respectfully, the Ben Ish Mitzri fighting and cursing.

The musar is unmistakable.  Sometimes how we say something is even more important than what we are saying.  Let us internalize this most important lesson.  Even when we see an apparent mistake, injustice or offense, we must approach the topic with respect, dignity and tolerance.  Often when one chooses to “fight”, the merits are lost in the noise.

"They are behaving very badly, as they have for 47 years," Trump said about the regime, noting that the US "hit them hard" after they launched drones and a missile at ships. According to the President, "It's not even a war; it's the denuclearization of Iran. It's not about regime change. MIDTOWN EAST, Manhattan (WABC) -- The effort to stabilize an under-construction high-rise in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday is expected to last "into the night," keeping streets shut down and buildings evacuated, officials said. A city official said a team that was sent in late Tuesday afternoon has completed their initial assessment and contractors can now move forward with the installation of temporary shoring to stabilize the building. It all started when a structural column buckled on the 21st floor, and additional structural issues were subsequently discovered, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said. "The building remains unstable," Mamdani said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon, as there had been additional movement in one of the columns since city officials arrived. "This i...

Baltimore, MD - July 7, 2026  - Just months after Maryland lawmakers approved a utility relief package aimed at lowering energy costs, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) is seeking another increase that would raise the average residential customer's bill by about $8 a month. The utility has asked the Maryland Public Service Commission to approve the increase as part of its latest rate case, saying the additional revenue is needed "to sustain a safe and reliable system," not to fund new programs or services. If approved, the increase would cost the average customer about $96 a year, offsetting a significant portion of the estimated annual savings many customers are expected to receive under Maryland's recently passed Utility Relief Act. The request comes as many Marylander...
