Baltimore, MD - We are fortunate to live in a city that has many resources available.  Whether it is helping organizations to the community at large for different needs to smaller scale Gemachs, one can access a plethora of services and goods from a variety of ways.  There are clothing gemachs, shalom zachor and bris accessories and simcha gemachs, medical equipment  gemachs, and so much more.  Open up the Eruv List or Advertiser and  you will most certainly find what you need.

I would like to introduce a new one to our community. It is Jack’s Lending Library in memory of my father, Jack Margaretten, a”h.  While we do have other libraries out there, this one is with a specific niche, one for the grieving family and friends.

This kind of happened by accident, but we know most things don’t just “happen.”
A friend called me up wanting to buy a children’s book for a friend of hers whose family was dealing with the tragic loss of a family member. She called me knowing that as a preschool teacher and book lover, as well as being  involved with Zisel’s LINKS, a peer support organization for children and teens who’s parent(s) have died, I would know kids books relating to this topic. And she was right!

Over the years, I have accumulated beautiful children’s books relating to death and grieving, for my personal pleasure (I love kids books of all kinds) and for work in both teaching and Zisel’s LINKS capacities.

That’s when the lightbulb went off and I realized,” Hey!  There is no Gemach like this in Baltimore!”  Always on the lookout for ways to do L’iluy Nishamas opportunities for my father, as he died when I was a preschooler, Jack’s Library was born.

While nobody wants to read about this topic for fun, for families, friends, neighbors, teachers, and therapists  dealing with loss, be it an older person  or a young child,  it is a necessary one to address for the sake of healing and educating.  Picture books are a safe and soothing manner in which to do this.

For the sake of privacy, Jack’s Lending Library will be open by appointment only.

As with any library, books will be cared for respectfully and returned in a timely manner. Donations are welcome and appreciated and a great way to commemorate a loved one. Please call or text 410-733-6171.
