Jerusalem, Israel - May 21, 2024 - On Tuesday morning at the Orient Isrotel Hotel in Jerusalem, Israel, President Isaac Herzog gave the opening address to thel Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society - Israel at War 2024, held annually by the Israel Democracy Institute.

In his address, President Herzog stated, “Two days ago, I met with the U.S. National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, and heard from him what was officially announced yesterday—that there is an option for normalization with Saudi Arabia. This is a move that could bring about tremendous change, a historic 'game-changer' that constitutes a victory over the empire of evil.”

He stressed, “I very much hope that this possibility is being seriously considered, as the empire of evil sought on October 7 to destroy the chance for normalization. Our struggle, in the end, is not only a fight against Hamas. It is a wider, strategic, global, and historic battle, and we must do everything to integrate into the grand vision of normalization."

The President noted, “One of our most significant comparative advantages as we enter this campaign is the fact that Israel and our business sector have powerful, worldwide connections and bridges. These connections and bridges are currently threatened by our enemies, who are trying to isolate us in order to harm us. The enemy, the evil empire of Iran and its proxies, along with various promoters of boycotts, are attempting in every way to damage these connections through an aggressive, cynical international campaign against us. This was evident yesterday in the outrageous statement by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, who equated the government of Israel - a democratic state - with the leaders of a murderous terrorist organization. A statement that the entire world, especially the free world, must unequivocally reject and condemn. This is ostensibly a legal frontline, but it is a strategic frontline, and it has implications across all sectors: military, diplomatic, and economic. Therefore, we must strengthen as much as possible the security and economic alliances that Israel has around the world, especially with our greatest and most important ally the United States, with countries in the European Union, other countries around the world, and of course, the countries of the Abraham Accords; and conduct a comprehensive, coordinated, precise, and focused campaign to repel this.”

He concluded, “Despite the difficulties, we are not disconnected from the world, and the world is not disconnected from us. On the contrary, the global and regional front is crucial to us and is a central tool for the security of the state. We all saw this with our own eyes, in the face of Iranian missiles and drones, how a regional and global coalition operated together with us.”

The conference, held May 21-22, 2024, is chaired by Prof. Karnit Flug with Daphna Aviram Nitzan serving as the conference director. Hundreds of Israel government and business leaders participate each year discussing budgets and finance matters.

On Tuesday prior to lunch, US Ambassador Jack Lew spoke with IDI President Yohanan Plesner in English. From 2013 to 2017, Lew served as the US Secretary of the Treasury. Trying to avoid Plesner's political questions about the ICC, Lew said he was much more comfortable discussing capital markets. "I may be an outlander, but I still believe in fair trade and openess that offers benefits to all participants," acknowledging, "Not all invobled with global economies play by the rules." How to have open relations and how and who you do business with is important to the future, and added, "Few countries in the world including United States and Israel who have real a comparative vantage on technology."
