Baltimore, MD - Jan. 24, 2024 - Toras Simcha students were treated to a visit by Rabbi Emanuel Goldfeiz who pointed out that it was a clear and open miracle that the Egyptians' gold and silver floated on the surface at the splitting of the Yam Suf.  Why did Hashem create this miracle if Moshe was told to persuade the Jews to leave the gold and silver behind and continue their journey?

Hashem could have just let the gold and silver sink, as it ordinarily does, and no one would have been tempted to collect more riches.  Rabbi Goldfeiz explained that Hashem was teaching the Jews an important lesson about wealth.  We must be satisfied with what we have, even when we think we can have so much more.  As the Mishna in Avos says: איזהו עשיר השמח בחלקו. Rabbi Golfeiz further illustrated this principle by asking the students what is the size of one's stomach.  He informed the students if they make a fist they will know the approximate size of their stomach.  The Rambam says that one should only eat 2/3 of the amount that would totally fill him!
