Jerusalem, Israel - Jan. 16, 2024 - One of the first and most important stops included in the various solidarity delegations, support missions, and Birthright trips is to visit Har Herzl, in Jerusalem, Israel. Many community cemeteries have a section dedicated to military burial, but Har Herzl is the location of Israel's largest military cemetery dedicated to the fallen IDF soldiers.

The World Mizrachi Movement has been supporting solidarity missions for the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA). For the 6th RCA World Mizrachi Delegation to Israel, held from January 9-11, 2024, RCA rabbis in Israel and their spouses were invited to join.

At Har Herzl, archeologist and tour guide Barnea Levi Selavan joined the group to enable the Cohanim to also benefit from the experience with explanations and guidance to areas they could access.

The military burial site is divided into sections for the various wars over the past 75 years. Early grave sites were made to look all the same, but more recent areas have been personalized with photos, memorabilia, flowers, and even birthday balloons. The National Memorial Hall for Fallen Soldiers has each name posted on the walls inside.

As the current war goes into its third month the number of new graves is sadly growing and new areas on Har Herzl are being prepared. Rabbi Hillel Van Leeuwen of Mizrachi shared a personal story of the "knock on the door" near the grave site of an extended family member. The IDF informs immediate family members of the soldiers who were killed in person, thus, by the dreaded knock on the door.

In the short time, we were at Har Herzl Military Cemetery, a shloshim for Naftali Yona Gordon z"l was ending. At the same time, crowds were arriving for the levaya of Gavriel Bloom Z"l. Bloom was in the same IDF announcement providing details on the names of four IDF soldiers whose families have been notified, that included David Schwartz z"l and Yakir Hexter z"l the talmidim of Rabbi Moshe Taragin.

Too many of Israel's finest have fallen in Gaza while trying to protect civilians from the Hamas terrorists. The intense stage of the war is said to be ending. However, the terror tunnel network under Gaza has not been destroyed and 136 hostages remain captive. The dreaded knock on the door remains, for now and an unknown time in the future.
