Jerusallem, Israel - Dec. 15, 2023  - This year the eight days of Chanukah celebrations in Israel were not the usual time filled with tourists. The major highways were still filled with traffic as people tried to get to candlelighting at home and around to family. But with the IDF fighting Hamas in Gaza and soldiers falling, the mood was certainly not the same time of tourists and joyful large events and concerts.

Hotels had special events on Chanukah for the thousands of displaced Israelis whose homes were destroyed on October 7, and those still under threat of Hamas missiles from Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hotels that would be filled with tourists at normal times are now filled with Israelis who would rather be home.

The large menorahs were lit at the Kotel every night, but not with the same enthusiastic crowds. Chabad and local municipalities held celebrations, and events to entertain the children who were on school holiday. With travel warnings and so many reservists serving in the IDF campaign, Israelis did not travel as in past years. Instead of lavish gift giving, many have been donating time and goods and money to help soldiers, their families and those away from home.

Latkes are not so popular with Israelis, but sufganiyot the Israeli Chanukah donuts are well known as a holiday treat.  They are more of a Chanukah staple, from before and during the holiday, millions are consumed.

Sfinge, a Moroccan sweet fried pastry is famous throughout the Sephardic world and has gained popularity in Israel, influenced by the large population who emigrated from Morocco. Similar to donuts, a fresh sfinge was too good to resist, I waited for seconds to come out of the oil.

Not on Chanukah.

But on the last night of Sukkot, as Hashana Raba on October 5,  began, BJL was invited to a Moroccan-themed sukkah dinner at the new Theatron Hotel in Jerusalem, Israel across the street from the Jerusalem Theater.

Currently, Theatron is hosting displaced Israelis, but the memory of the amazing fried Chanukah pastry remains.

In the photo essay, are scenes from the hotel and a beautiful night with the sfinge, so long ago, and with highlights of the lights of Chanukah 5784.

Prayers for the lights to overcome the darkness. May next year in Yerushalayim, be back to complaining of too many tourists and traffic again.
