Baltimore, MD – Oct. 20, 2023 - A massive crowd of close to fourteen hundred women and girls, gathered in Bais Yaakov High School this past Wednesday, for a night of chizzuk, tefilla, and achdus in light of the tragedy and distressing matzav in Eretz Yisroel. Over thirty community shuls, stemming from the breadth and width of the Baltimore community, participated in the event, along with many of the shuls' esteemed rebbetzins.
The women joined together in a tremendous show of achdus, a true testament of the beautiful Baltimore kehilla in which we live. The packed room was alive with connection and inspiration with a unified goal: to be mechazek ourselves, to share our pain, and to daven together for yeshuos and rachamei Shamayim.
Rebbetzin Aliza Wein opened the evening by pointing out that Klal Yisroel's strength is in its achdus and this wondrous asifa was such a beautiful way to channel this power to beseech Hashem to bring a yeshua. The evening, organized with little advance notice, was the brainchild of Rebbetzin Hindy Motzen who worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition, and the large turnout was clearly a sign that so many women want to strengthen themselves in response to the events of the past two weeks.
HaRav Shragi Neuberger shared divrei hisorerus and chizuk, comforting the klal with hope and strength, recognizing the pain, but propelling klal Yisroel to recognize our uniqueness and special role as Hshem’s nation. Rabbi Neuberger pointed out that we should not constantly check the news, but rather, we should keep living and doing mitzvos without getting caught up in the need for information, which is especially difficult in the “digital age”.
Rabbi Neuberger also stressed the need for each of us to acknowledge how much we count. Our mitzvos count, our tefillos count, and we need to know how precious our personal efforts are to Hshem. Specifically, we should try to do a mitzvah in private, without sharing with others. Our Father, who loves us more than a parent can love a child, appreciates every mitzvah, every smile, act of chessed, and action we do. We matter. By recognizing our individual gadlus, Rabbi Neuberger explained, we can make the impact needed to bring rachamim and yeshuos and hopefully the geula b’karov.
Unfortunately, Rebbetzin Lea Feldman was not feeling up to attending the event as planned, but sent a message, which was relayed by Rebbetzin Motzen, that the klal should join together and serve Hshem as one unit.
Mrs. Shifra Rabenstein was clearly emotional, as she shared words of chizzuk to the crowd. Before beginning, she urged everyone to stop and look around the packed room to appreciate just how amazing it was that so many women came out to participate and come together in our pain for Klal Yisroel. Mrs. Rabenstein explained the sources for aveilus in galus and the directive given to ensure that we continue to live and build without getting caught up in the pain of our tzaros. We should remember the strength of Klal Yisroel to keep pushing through the hardships and persevere, as we have always done. Mrs. Rabenstein echoed the words of Rabbi Neuberger, pushing us to keep doing mitzvos and recognize our power to serve Hshem through it all.
Several kapitlach of Tehillim were recited line by line, led by several Rebbetzins of the community, representing different parts of our growing, diverse community. To end the evening, Rebbetzin Wein led the women in heartfelt song. The women sang the timeless melodies of Acheinu, Ani Maamin, and V'liyrushalayim which are also tefillos, begging for Hashem to save our brethren, bring Moshiach, and rebuild the Bais Hamikdosh.
The uplifting evening was a tremendous chizuk to everyone, connecting the women of the Baltimore kehilla through the goal of being mechazek together and calling out with tefilla for yeshuos and the geulah. May Hashem answer the tefillos of Baltimore’s nashim tzidkoniyos who came together to daven for Klal Yisroel at this magnificent gathering of Kiddush Sheim Shomayim!
