During the operation, six senior leaders of the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization were killed in IDF strikes, beginning with Jihad Ghannam, Tareq Izzeldeen, and Khalil Al-Bahtini in the opening salvos of the operation. Ghannam was the secretary of the Military Council of the al Quds Brigades, the terror organization's military wing, Izzeldeen was in charge of many of Islamic Jihad's operations in Judea and Samaria, and Khalil Al-Bahtini was the commander of the northern region of the al Quds Brigades.
The IDF published audio from the beginning of the conflict in which the IAF pilots were told that "there is approval for all three" strikes on the Islamic Jihad commanders.
Two days later, Ali Ghali, the commander of Islamic Jihad's rocket launching force, and his deputy, Ahmed Abu-Deka, were killed. Ghali and Abu-Deka were responsible for the firing of hundreds of rockets at Israel last week.
