JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska (AP) — President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin shook hands warmly at the start of their Alaska summit on Friday before heading into hours of discussions that could reshape the war in Ukraine and relations between Moscow and Washington.
The leaders greeted each other on the tarmac at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, where officials erected a special stage, with a large “Alaska 2025” sign flanked by parked fighter jets and red carpets. Uniformed military members stood at attention nearby. B-2s and F-22s — military aircraft designed to oppose Russia during the Cold War — were flying over to mark the moment.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the previously planned one-on...
In 2015, a quiet street in Jerusalem was named for Moshe (Miklós) Krausz, a man whose extraordinary heroism during the Holocaust had gone largely unrecognized for decades. A Hungarian Jew and leader of the Palestine Office of the World Zionist Movement in Budapest, Krausz orchestrated one of the largest rescue operations of the Holocaust - saving at least 40,000 Jews, with some estimates as high as 100,000.
To appreciate the scale of his achievement, consider that Oskar Schindler - whose name is universally known - rescued 1,200 Jews. Yet Krausz’s story remained in the shadows. When he died in Jerusalem in 1986, it was in obscurity and without public acknowledgment of his heroism.
When the Nazis invaded Hungary in March 1944 and began deporting Jews to concentration camps, M...
BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Even as an adult, I still find myself mesmerized by the weekly morning garbage pickup — the rumble of the truck, the excessively loud beeping of the backup alarm system, the collectors hopping off the back, the swift lift and toss of the garbage into the hopper, and the satisfying crush as the packer swallows the garbage into its interior.I’ve always admired garbage collectors — not because I’d want to be one, but precisely because I wouldn’t. Who would want to be a garbage collector? It’s hard, messy work. They ride the back of a truck in all weather, hauling away everyone else’s waste. Yet, despite the stigma, we all know how indispensable they are to modern society. Their work is absolutely essential for maintaining public health, environmental ...

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.

Baltimore, MD - Aug. 15, 2025 - Research shows Baltimore City spent more than $12 million in taxpayer dollars in 2024 to fund salaries for more than 150 employees in Mayor Brandon Scott’s office.
A handful of those employees earned more than Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, the state’s highest-ranking elected official. According to data from watchdog nonprofits, that trend continues into 2025.
Two government spending watchdogs, Open the Books and the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, told Spotlight on Maryland that the salaries represent not only concerning pay disparities but irresponsible fiscal management.
Among the highest earners in Scott’s office in 2024, several made between $196,000 and $237,000 annually:
Dana Moore, Director for the Office of Equity & Civil Rights...

South Sudan has reportedly agreed to receive Gaza Arab civilians under a resettlement plan quietly brokered with Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, according to diplomatic sources cited by The Telegraph.
An official from South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry told the British outlet that the cabinet had approved the arrangement, which includes Israeli investment in infrastructure and US sanctions relief, alongside Emirati financial support.
“The South Sudanese land is enough to host more people from different nations,” the official said, noting the economic potential of the deal. However, he added, “This kind of deal is not easy for South Sudanese to understand right now.”
Despite Wednesday’s denial by South Sudanese autho...

Toronto, Canada - Aug. 14, 2025 - A controversial decision by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to pull a film depicting the October 7 Hamas massacre in southern Israel has been reversed following a wave of international condemnation and intense negotiations, the Toronto Sun reported.
