Baltimore, MD - July 19, 2022 - On the evening of July 18, 2022, the Jerusalem Night Run was held in conjunction with the 21st international Maccabiah 2022. Registration was open online to the public and thousands of people of all ages came to Jerusalem, Israel's Gan Sacher.

Runners participated in the half-marathon, 10K or 5K routes which wound through challenging hilly Jerusalem roads. Once again streets in Jerusalem were blocked to traffic. Many residents complained of the restricted movement, especially so soon after the US Presidential visit, however, thousands of people celebrated sport in Jerusalem.

Security was visible at the park and along the various routes. But there was also motivational music and water along the way for the nighttime runners, the Maccabiah athletes, and Israel groups which included an IDF group running with an Israeli flag.

Heading the US delegation Track and Field team manager Mark Burns told BJL he was born and bred in Baltimore, though he lives in Florida now. Argentina and Australia were among the other noticeable groups in the numbers of runners and spectators.

There were three start times, with Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion participating at each. A Ukrainian flag was seen at the starting line for the first group running. The second race was delayed for a few minutes for a US runner to propose to his girlfriend. She said yes. Then he proceeded to the starting line to waiting runners' high-fives and shouts of mazel tov.

For the Maccabiah, athletes compete in dozens of sports and are cheered by tens of thousands of support staff, spectators, and tourists. Family members from around the world have come to watch their relatives participate. There will be sporting events taking place around the country that will be open to the general public under the slogan, ‘Israel Celebrates Sport."

The summer night in Jerusalem, cooled enough to make the Jerusalem Night Run a pleasant one to celebrate.
