Just three days after the brutal murder of Yehuda Dimentman, an avreich who was studying at the yeshiva of Chomesh in Samaria, the Israeli government’s response has been to close the yeshiva and demolish all of its structures. The army brought in bulldozers to uproot the few buildings established by the yeshiva on the ruins of what was a vibrant community before it was uprooted in 2005 during the disengagement.

The yeshiva has been active until now at Chomesh since the army continues to maintain presence at the strategic site which presents a view of the entire coastal plain. When Ariel Sharon destroyed the northern Samarian communities he continued to designate them as Area C in full Israeli control due to their strategic nature. Yet despite this and despite numerous right-wing governments established since then, Chomesh remains unpopulated and the yeshiva students return to other communities every night.

The attack on the yeshiva students should have served as a catalyst for restoring the community in Chomesh, but the government instead decided to remove the yeshiva. Yossi Dagan, the head of the Samarian Regional Council, says that by acting in this way Israel has “given a prize to terror” and provided more motivation to terrorists to continue their barbaric activities.
