The Israeli ministry of health published new data Monday about the steep rise in coronavirus infections in Israel. For the first time in the last two months, more than 1000 people tested positive for coronavirus within a day. The rate of infection has also increased dramatically, rising to 1.22 after being 1.14 on Sunday.

The number of people in serious condition is still very low comparative to recent waves, with 81 people still in serious condition and 42 on a respirator. During the last two days there were no fatalities from coronavirus in Israel. More than 6 million Israelis have received one shot against coronavirus and more than 4 million have received the third  booster shot.

However the coronavirus project manager, Professor Zarka, warns that the next wave will see thousands of infections in an unprecedented manner. Zarka says that “if we look at Europe, we will see that we have a breathing space of two, maximum three weeks in which we need to provide more protection for the public.”

The reason for the current wave is the omicron strain. “The delta strain was highly infectious but the omicron is two to four times more contagious,” Professor Zarka added. “The fact that we have only 175 cases of omicron is because we acted fast and stopped tourism two weeks ago....
