Jerusalem, Israel - July 13, 2021  - Who does not get "stuck" at least on occasion? We are not talking about getting stuck in traffic on a hot day, but in making a decision, taking action, and moving forward. Especially over the past year, with the coronavirus pandemic changing our lives and the things we took for granted, the feeling of being out of control, and finding it hard to move forward was all too common.

Upon Google searching for "unstuck books," the response was a staggering number - over 1.5 million results.  However, new to the list the book "The Wisdom of Getting Unstuck: How to emerge from and avoid the muddy middle" by Shimshon Meir Frankel looks at the topic from a Torah perspective.

Rabbi Shimshon Meir Frankel is a clinical psychologist with over twenty-five years of experience in helping people navigate their family relationships and personal issues.

He begins with an introduction describing his personal journey and struggles. "You are the author of your own story. You're the main character and, as you know, a compelling story has the main character come into conflict with an opposing force. This force is your Antagonist." Throughout the following 24 chapters, different ways to confront the Antagonist are presented.

Using recurring references to Pirkei Avos, the Mishnah, R. Yehudah ben Tema, and King David, set this volume apart from others with similar themes. Before becoming king of Israel, David had multiple serious challenges to overcome. "King David first focused on his legs and beseeched Hashem, "Lead me on the path of Your statutes (Your ways), for that is my desire." Tehillim 119:35-37. Multiple footnotes throughout the book lead us to a pasuk in Tehillim, Chumash, or other commentaries.

Rabbi Frankel is a passionate advocate for redefining how we think about and treat problems, especially the most common ones of anxiety and depression. For example, he writes "Our ability to separate the bad from the good is indicative of our capacity to understand one thing from another. Being hyper-focused on the bad will simply cause us to get even more entangled." Case studies are provided to support his words. Suggestions to get unstuck and away from your Antagonist include removing yourself from the bad by way of doing good. He advocates changing your story to serve your best interests so as to change your reality for the better.

Each chapter ends with valuable, clear, and bulleted “Takeaways” which summarize the chapter and offer practical steps for implementing what has been discussed. An appendix also provides a detailed outline of each chapter for review and future reference.

Rabbi Frankel lives in Zichron Yaakov, Israel, with his wife and children.
