The vote for the amended Citizenship Law fell through and failed to pass after receiving 59 votes in favor and 59 in opposition.The vote took place in Knesset shortly before 6:30 a.m. after over five hours of speeches on the plenum floor.
The vote for the Citizenship Law took place in the format of a confidence vote, meaning that those who vote against it will also be placing a vote of no confidence in the government. Ra'am MKs Saeed Alharomi and Mazen Ghanaim abstained from the vote, and Shas MK Yoav Bentzur was absent from the plenum at the time of the vote.Opposition members applauded and had to be called to order after Yamina MK Chikli voted against the law and the government. He had previously been in favor of the bill and had negotiated with the coalition about rejoining it after initially opposing it.
The coalition approved an amendment to the Citizenship and Entry into Israel Law which would allow it to be extended by six months instead of one year, by a telephone poll early on Tuesday morning.The amended law was presented by Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked who clarified that she wished to withdraw her original proposal, and Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy reopened the debate around the subject ahead of the vote.The compromise that would allow the Citizenship Law to be extended for six months instead of a year was agreed upon by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Shaked after a meeting with the Meretz faction on Monday night.
