President of Israel Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Thursday 29 April / 17 Iyyar, visited AFB 21 - the IAF Technical College in Haifa. He was escorted on his visit by commander of the IAF Maj.-Gen. Amikam Norkin. The president was briefed on the school by commander of the IAF equipment directorate Brig.-Gen. Shimon Zenziper and base commander Col. Eran Dahan.

“The family of the Israel Air Force is a family with a fine heritage. I am happy that that the diverse school community is joining the family, because we are all sons and daughters of this land. We all protect it, develop it and build it together,” said the president to the cadets.

During his visit, the president met the commanders and cadets of the IAF Technical College, which is a technical-vocational high school that awards high school graduation certificates, technical diplomas, technician diplomas and engineering technician diplomas. The school attracts a wide range of students from around the country and from all sectors of society, 91% of whom complete full military service and then take good jobs in the civilian sector.

The president also spoke with participants in “Tochna be’Emuna”, a program that integrates and trains Charedi women for technology roles in IAF unit Ofek 324. The women have degrees in computer science and software engineering, and come from Bnei Brak, Lod and Jerusalem.

They told the president about the complex decision to join the program, and about the decisions they face as ultra-Orthodox women undergoing such unique training. Esti said, “My parents visited a military base for the first time in their lives when I completed the course. It moved me to tears when they understood that we can accept each other, just as we are, without compromising on our way of life and contributing in an incredible way.”

The president commended the women on their choice, saying they set an example for our lives here, all tribes together without harming each other.

The president then spoke with students from ‘Ro’im Rachok’, a project that integrates young people on the autistic spectrum in computing roles in the IDF. Alon, responsible for developing a system to manage the recruitment process to flight school, presented the program to the president, telling him about the team he runs and his successful integration into the unit. “It was important to me to join up, despite being exempt, and programing has been my hobby for years so I am combining something I love with contributing to the country,” he said. The president said that he was proud of him, adding “we are blessed to have soldiers like you and your friends.”

IAF commander Maj.-Gen. Amikam Norkin thanked the president for his visit, saying “I am happy and proud to welcome you here today to the IAF Technical College. Young people from all around the country come here and gain high-quality technological training that is a strong base for the Israeli technology sector. The IAF’s technical system, a professional body that includes first-rate people who bear the responsibility for the operational status and readiness of the air force’s operational capabilities.”
