As Gantz tries to shorten lockdown, Netanyahu warns:' The blood of many Israelis will be on your hands.'

Israel’s cabinet unanimously voted to extend lockdown to Sunday at 7 am early Friday, following a dramatic argument between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz hours before the lockdown would automatically lift.

“It is good that the government accepted Ministry of Health recommendations and my recommendations, with only minor changes," Netanyahu said.

Gantz opposed Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and Netanyahu’s intention of keeping Israel closed until midnight on Sunday, leading to a harsh verbal exchange.

“Gantz wants as bad of a morbidity rate as possible for the sake of the elections. You’re sentencing many Israelis to a harsh death,” Netanyahu said.

“Don’t tell me stories,” Gantz replied. “Don’t teach me anything about human lives.”

“The blood of many Israelis will be on your hands,” Netanyahu added. On Wednesday, Israel reported 7,385 new cases amid a death rate that passed 5,000 later in the week. Read more at i24
