Israel's third national lockdown, which is entering its fourth week, is scheduled to expire after midnight

Israeli lawmakers are expected to convene Sunday afternoon and vote to raise fines for individuals flouting coronavirus restrictions, paving the way for the country's national lockdown strategy to be extended.

Israel's third national lockdown, which is entering its fourth week, is scheduled to expire just after midnight without government action. 

Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz, leader of the Blue and White party, had threatened last week to scuttle the extension if fines were not raised against lockdown violators in a move aimed at some in the ultra-Orthodox community who have repeatedly flouted restrictions over the last several weeks. 

Health Ministry Director-General Chezy Levy on Saturday said that the country's lockdown strategy aimed at driving down new coronavirus infections was having an impact, albeit at a "slow and disappointing rate.” 

Although Israel is currently leading the world in its inoculation drive, with nearly 3 million already receiving the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, Levy lamented recent Health Ministry statistics showing the current lockdown has yet to produce a dramatic drop-off in infection numbers.
