'We will be able to inoculate the first dose again sooner than planned'

Prof Chezy Levy, Director-General of Israel's Health Ministry said that there is not enough information at present to say whether there is a real brake on the spread of the coronavirus in the country as a nationwide lockdown came into force on Thursday evening.

Over the past four days, however, there has been a decrease in the number of cases, despite an increase in the number of tests - leading health authorities to conclude that containment is bringing results.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz assessed that it is possible to reduce the duration of confinement (initially scheduled for two weeks) if there is a constant and continuous drop in new cases.

Levy noted that Israel's current stock of the Pfizer vaccine can protect against the British mutation of COVID-19, also adding that it is possible that it is responsible for the surge of new cases for several weeks in the country. 

“I don't rule out the possibility that this mutation is among us, albeit at low rates,” he said. Read more at i24
