Jerusalem, Israel - Jan. 8, 2021 - Friday, October 8, 2021, in Israel, erev Shabbos Shemos was the first day of the third lockdown due to the increase in COVID-19 infections. Throughout the greater Yerushalayim area there was a visible increased security presence. 

Police road blocs were at various exits or entrances of certain neighborhoods. Officers were doing foot patrols checking parked cars. Some stores had uniformed officers checking workers or customers. 

The security measures by the Israeli Prime Minister's Residence have increased over the past 10 years. New layers of security and improved barriers have been added since the anti-government protests began months ago. However, more security was evident today as the weekly Friday protesters gathered on the main street near the residence. At the entrance to Balfour Street, the security was apparent, but the barbed wire lined barriers reported from the night before were not to be seen.

Last Shabbos protesters with fire torches broke through and got dangerously close to the Prime Minister's Residence frightening residents on Smolenskin Street. Following the events in Washington, DC security in Yerushalayim was on higher alert. Though a smaller group was present in the weekly protest area, police were walking and watching the crowd carefully.

Motorcycles were out delivering food. In the warm sun, people took advantage to run, to walk their dogs, or to sit and let babies in carriages sleep. Customers were lined up (at a distance) to buy challah from a popular bakery outlet store. Food shopping is allowed, small local stores were open. Next to a display of essentials of bottled water and toilet paper, a book store had its door open. 

Multiple locations had brightly colored flowers on display for sale. For the start of a two-week lockdown, somethings were familiar erev Shabbos in Yerushalayim. However, a Shabbos with no guests allowed to come inside and even outdoor minyanim in question.
