The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit has overturned New York state’s strict limitations on houses of worship, following a landmark injunction issued by the U.S. Supreme Court last month.

“This decision has important ramifications that go way beyond COVID restriction,” Avi Schick, attorney for plaintiffs Agudath Israel and several of its shuls, told Hamodia immediately after the ruling came down Monday afternoon. “It is a clear statement from the Second Circuit that government can’t disfavor religion merely because they see no value in it. I fully expect this decision to stop future governments from imposing rules that restrict religion, and it also sets a standard that we can rely on in court in those instances when government does not heed that lesson.”
