President of Israel Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Thursday 24 December / 9 Tevet, paid a condolence call at the family home of Esther Horgan ז"ל at Tal Menashe in Samaria. Esther was murdered in the Reichan Forest on Monday 21 December / 6 Tevet. The president was escorted on his visit by head of the Shomron Regional Council Yossi Dagan.
The president met Esther’s husband Binyamin and their children and hear about her joie de vivre and the help and support she offered to all those around. Her husband Binyamin told the president about her life and how she saw the good in everyone. “Esther brought light to the world. That is how she lived and that is how she educated and brought up our family.”
“You built this wonderful place to bring up, to love and with the wish to be part of this land, and not to make life difficult for others,” said the president, adding that in recent days he had read about Esther ז"ל and was deeply moved by the positive spirit that was with her in life. “You and those like you are today’s Zionists.”
Binyamin, Esther’s husband, said “She did not just work at it, she also lived the meaning of seeing the good in every person and believed in it.” Odelia, their oldest daughter, told the president of the special connection with her mother, saying “My mother was my best friend. She was a backbone for me. As the oldest, I know that she and I grew together, helping each other to grow. She was there for everything I needed.”
The president listened to her, saying “A mother is a mother and the pain is unbearable, the loss is so great.”
Odelia spoke about her mother’s love of nature. “When Mom and I spoke about her favorite view, the one that opened her heart and soul and where she felt free, she said that the forests and mountains were her favorite. It is some consolation that her burial place has that view and that she feels free.”
Avigail, Esther’s younger daughter added, “I learned from Mom about all aspects of life, about relationships, about mental and physical health, and how important they are. I learned from her how important it is to accept everyone. I can’t believe that I won’t get any more strength from her and that she won’t guide me anymore.”
“The void is huge and the pain is enormous, but you can continue in her light and in her way,” the president responded. “You have a wonderful, close family, your father and your brother. You were blessed with such a wonderful mother, and you had a partner, companion and helpmeet.” As he left, the president expressed his wish that the family would know no more grief and wished them happy occasions in the near future.
