Jerusalem, Israel - Dec. 23, 2020 - Is there anyone this past year of COVID-19 stress, with the novel coronavirus pandemic of 2020, who has not felt the roller coaster of up and down days? One day we feel we have this thing under control, and the next day things seem to spin out of our control.
From selling hotdogs, as a teenager, Howard Jonas rose to the top of the telecom communications world. Then the success came tumbling down. Now he's back up and adding to his list of accomplishments, an entrepreneur in the development of cancer drugs. Jonas has republished his 2004 book, I'm Not the Boss, I Just Work Here, with an updated preface.
Jonas writes that he lost hundreds of millions of dollars drilling for oil and promoting technologies no one wanted, "But God has never stopped watching over my family and me. And even in the worst of time I never gave up my faith and never fully gave up on myself."
His book is an acclamation of faith to accept those bad days, and encouragement to come back from a mental, spiritual, or emotional depth. "Fear accompanies depression. Fear banishes faith. Fear makes you give up...God can always make a miracle and save you."
In the preface to the original edition, Jonas wrote "I am an Orthodox Jew. I eat only kosher and pray three times a day. I am, however, not an expert on God...I am an expert on depression. I have been seriously clinically depressed twice in my life, once for close to a year."
He sees those ups and downs as challenges to overcome or at least provide the satisfaction of trying. Jonas writes how he keeps the story of Yosef in mind, the lowly Hebrew slave in the house of Potifar who rose to great prominence in Egypt.
This generation and the times we live in have seen and experienced drastic changes. Pass on values and experience, strive to continue the chain, work to overcome challenges with our free will, do our best to make the world a better place, and acknowledge the presence of God in the world recommends Jonas.
Howard Jonas is best known for founding multi-billion dollar IDT at the age of 37. His success story is usually not one of dealing with depression. He is to be commended for speaking out on the serious topic of depression and mental health.
Those with clinical depression and mental health problems should seek professional help. It can be a long and difficult journey back.
Jonas in resharing his story of adversity is well-timed, as the year 2020 draws to an end. His words seek to provide hope and inspiration for the reader to achieve resilience and good health in 2021.
